Aljmaš: River Landscape, Pilgrimage and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Aljmaš
Aljmaš lies at the confluence of the Drava and Danube; the river landscape is a defining part of the town. At the same time, pilgrimage, remembrance and local cultural heritage are central to several visitor experiences. If you are looking for a hotel in Aljmaš, consider whether you would like to connect your stay more with religious heritage, history or outdoor activities. The following places and routes offer concrete starting points.
Hiking and River Landscape
The Podunavski pješački put begins at Mišino brdo outside Aljmaš, passes through the town, follows the Danube and ends in Erdut. The entire route takes about five hours and crosses terrain that is not very demanding technically or physically. The route is intended not only for hikers, but also for nature enthusiasts and tourists. A footpath also leads uphill to Kalvarija and the viewpoint.
The old Drava river arm, which flows into the Danube near Aljmaš, is considered an excellent area for sport fishing. For travelers interested in sport fishing, this river arm is therefore a specific point of interest in the Aljmaš river landscape.
Pilgrimage and Cultural Heritage
Gospa pod Lipom is one of the religious sites. Its name comes from the linden trees planted around a chapel near a water source. You can reach this excursion destination through an ancient oak forest. The story behind its name is thus connected with a path through the forest.
The Gospe od Utočišta sanctuary became known in 1704. Pilgrimages to Svetište Aljmaš can be organized on any day of the year; groups are asked to register in advance. The church in Aljmaš is a cultural monument. Its restored statue of the Virgin Mary returned to Aljmaš in 1998; restoration of the church was completed in 2007. The two dates mark different milestones: the statue’s return and the completion of the church restoration.
Remembrance and Culture
The Memorial Center opened in 2023 in a former military bunker below Kalvarija in Aljmaš. Visitors can explore religious, local and artistic works, historical documents, themed displays and two chapels independently. A permanent exhibition displays paintings and sculptures created by academic painters and sculptors during the Croatian War. The Center’s visitor displays therefore feature both historical documents and works of art.
Food and Wine Culture
Traditional food and drinks from the Danube region are part of the local tourism offering. These include catfish pörkölt with cheese noodles, homemade rakija and liqueurs, as well as cakes and pastries. VINCENT is a wine excursion destination in Aljmaš with capacity for 50 visitors. The food, drinks and wine destination offer different insights into the town’s culinary side.
Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination of Općina Erdut
The wider destination of Općina Erdut offers additional cultural experiences. In Dalj, the restored birthplace of Milutin Milanković houses a permanent exhibition about his life and work; it is also home to the “Milutin Milanković” Center for Culture and Science. The “Teutoburgium” Wine Museum was established in the center of Dalj as a project of the Municipality of Erdut in cooperation with Osijek-Baranja County. In Općina Erdut, the history of science and wine culture can thus be explored as distinct themes.
