Batina: Archaeology, the Danube and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Batina
Batina is the only settlement in Baranja on the Danube, situated where Bansko brdo meets the river. Archaeological heritage at Gradac, the Battle of Batina memorial site and riverside trails offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Batina, these themes can help you choose the focus that best suits your trip.
The Danube, the ridge and the views
An archaeological site with finds is located on a high loess plateau. Its steep slopes separate it from the Danube and the surrounding Pannonian Plain. On a clear day, views from the ridge of Bansko brdo extend to Hungary, Vojvodina including Sombor, and in the direction of Osijek and Erdut. This brings the river landscape and the ridge into view as distinct aspects of the scenery, without equating the plateau with the entire settlement area.
Archaeological heritage and memorial site
At Gradac, a large fortified settlement is part of the archaeological heritage. The archaeological site near Gradac in Batina is considered one of Europe’s most important in connection with the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The collection of the Archaeological Museum in Osijek is dominated by ceramic and metal objects from the Batina–Gradac and Sredno sites; they offer further insight into the archaeological contexts of these sites.
The Battle of Batina memorial site comprises more than a monument: the complex includes the “Victory” monument by sculptor Antun Augustinčić, a memorial house with two exhibition rooms and a permanent exhibition, a memorial park, and a mass grave containing the remains of 1,297 Red Army soldiers. The different elements bring together artistic commemoration, exhibitions and a burial site, so the memorial complex is not limited to the monument alone.
The furnishings of Batina’s Church of Saint Valentine also preserve the stylistic unity of its interior. They offer another, architectural perspective on Batina alongside its archaeological and memorial themes.
Hiking trails with different time requirements
The difference in length and walking time is clear when choosing a route: the Dvije Rijeke hiking trail follows the Danube riverbank embankment to the port in Batina and is approximately five kilometres long. A description dated 2021 gives the Baranja Mountaineering Route as 30 kilometres long, with a walking time of nine hours. In 2020, work was undertaken on hiking trail 622 between Zmajevac and Batina to establish, improve and register it as part of this route.
The two route descriptions offer different guidance for planning: Dvije Rijeke leads to the port in Batina, while the information for the Baranja Mountaineering Route describes a much longer time commitment. On a clear day, the view from the ridge of Bansko brdo is also part of the landscape orientation; it extends to Hungary, Vojvodina with Sombor, and in the direction of Osijek and Erdut.
Accommodation type and travel planning
Guests have access to a fishing pontoon and motorboats. These are amenities for guests of the holiday home, not independent attractions. Check the current availability of the house and its guest services before your trip.
