Bilje combines local history with activities on the water and along trails. For planning your trip, consider three areas of interest: architectural history in Bilje, activities around the lake and the Baranja Greenways, and other nature and cultural themes in the broader destination of Općina Bilje. If you are planning a hotel stay, these interests can help you narrow down the activities you would like to include in your trip.

Castle History and Architecture

Savoy Castle in Bilje stands on the edge of the Kopački rit wetlands and floodplain. Prince Eugene of Savoy is considered the castle’s first known owner. Savoy Castle is currently closed for reconstruction and renovation. Check access again before visiting.

Bilje is also home to the Baroque Church of Saint Mary, dating from the 18th century. The castle and church offer different points of historical interest: one relates to the castle’s history and its first known owner, while the other showcases sacred architecture from the 18th century.

Trails and Water

Baranja Greenways is a multi-purpose trail for walking, horseback riding and cycling. It passes through the municipality of Bilje and Kopački rit. These three activities give the trail its distinctive character, while its geographic reach extends beyond Bilje alone.

Biljsko jezero is locally known as Stara Drava. Anglers fish from the shore or from boats. On the shore of Stara Drava, the Veslački klub Biljsko jezero organizes amateur rowing competitions and social gatherings. This brings together two different ways of enjoying the water: fishing from the shore or a boat, and organized activities run by the rowing club on the shore.

Culture and Nature in the Broader Destination of Općina Bilje

In the broader destination of Općina Bilje, the TikveÅ” Presentation and Education Centre lies in the northern part of Kopački rit Nature Park. Its multimedia, interactive exhibition introduces visitors to the key features and natural phenomena of Kopački rit. This offers a different focus from cycling or fishing: here, the emphasis is on learning about the area’s natural environment.

The ā€œBlago močvareā€ educational trail has two observation huts. One is used to observe wildlife, especially deer during the rutting season; the other is intended for birdwatching along the Čarna Canal. The two huts are therefore clearly distinguished by their subject and location.

The cycling routes also differ in purpose. A newly refurbished cycling route connects Osijek with Lake Bilje, known to locals as Stara Drava. Baranja Greenways, by contrast, is described as a multi-purpose trail for walking, horseback riding and cycling, passing through the municipality of Bilje and Kopački rit.

For groups who make arrangements in advance, Zlatna Greda offers activities on every day of the week, including cycling, paddling through Kopački rit and photo safaris. The need to arrange activities in advance is important: this is a group offering, not an unrestricted walk-in service.

Fish Cuisine and Regional Events

Šaran u raŔljama originates in Kopačevo, within the municipality of Bilje, and is increasingly in demand at restaurants and events. Nearby, Restaurant Citadela in Vardarac serves fiŔ paprikaŔ and fish dishes, including Šaran u raŔljama. Before your trip, check whether the restaurant is open and whether the dishes you want are on the menu.

In the broader destination of Općina Bilje, Ribarski dani is held regularly in Kopačevo in early September. Visitors can enjoy traditional fish specialties, game dishes and wines from Baranja. The event also keeps the settlement’s fishing tradition alive.

Another culinary and cultural attraction is Paprika fest in Lug. Traditionally held to mark the village day, it highlights ground paprika as a particularly distinctive ingredient in Baranja’s cuisine. Visitors can also learn about the culture and customs of Hungarians in Croatia.

In Vardarac, the Ethno House and School Museum offers another perspective on school and local history. Its collections include around 400 objects and pieces of furniture. Together with the historic buildings in Bilje and the nature-themed attractions in the broader destination of Općina Bilje, it adds to the range of interests to consider when planning your trip.
