Municipality of Selnica: Oil History, Museum and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Municipality of Selnica
The Municipality of Selnica can be considered for trip planning through several specific themes: oil production, the Šardi Vintage Car Museum, cultural heritage and the L17 Rudarska MTB loop. Culture and cycling are distinct areas of interest. When choosing a destination for a stay, you can weigh up whether you are more interested in historical connections, a museum or a tour with clearly specified route details.
Oil History and Historical Collections
Oil production in Selnica continued until 1952; the Selničko oil field is considered one of the oldest oil fields in the world. Another historical reference is the parish church of St. Mark in Selnica, which is mentioned in a parish register of the Diocese of Zagreb. The register was drawn up on 9 August 1334. This date places the written reference in the 14th century; it should not be understood as the year the church was built.
The Šardi Vintage Car Museum offers a different focus: it is Croatia’s first museum of historic vehicles, has a permanent exhibition and displays more than 100 exhibits. The themes are therefore clearly distinct: the oil field represents local oil history, the church record an early written reference, and the museum historic vehicles. If a stay with a cultural focus is important to you, you can take these three perspectives into account when choosing destinations.
Cultural Heritage and Event Dates
The Selnički Pikač is part of the cultural heritage: it is the only traditional Međimurje mask in the Croatian Register of Cultural Heritage. Dan Pikača is held in Selnica on the third Saturday in July. Check the exact date of the event for the year you plan to travel, as the recurring day of the week is not a substitute for the specific calendar date.
The FICKO Festival also offers a glimpse of local events at a specific time: at the seventh edition in 2025, visitors could sample the žganice on offer in Selnica. Another event was Traktorijada 2022, the 16th gathering of owners of old tractors. It was organized by the Oldtimer klub Selnica, the Municipality of Selnica and the City of Mursko Središće. If you are planning to attend a future event, check the relevant dates and offerings.
Cycling and Navigation
The L17 Rudarska MTB loop is 17.70 kilometres long and rated moderate; it passes through Selnica and by the Selnica retention basin. Its surface is 46 percent gravel and 54 percent asphalt. The asphalt share is therefore eight percentage points higher. The length, difficulty rating and surface proportions provide separate criteria for planning your tour.
The Municipality of Selnica is close to the EuroVelo routes Iron Curtain Trail (Route 13) and Baltic–Adriatic Route (Route 9). If you are considering one of these long-distance routes, check the current route and signage in advance. For road navigation, the Municipality of Selnica is also on the important European transport corridor E65; take current road conditions into account when planning your specific route.
As a landscape reference, Selnica is one of the hilly settlements on the eastern edge of the Međimurje Wine Road. This regional context adds a connection to the wine road to the historical and sporting themes.
