Mursko Središće brings together two themes for planning a trip: its mining heritage and the Mura River with its promenade. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around different interests: mining history at specific memorial sites, cultural monuments and events, or walks, cycling and nature by the river. The experiences also differ in kind: the museum focuses on exhibits and interpretation, the promenade on activities and facilities, and events on specific dates.

Mining History in the Town

Spomen-dom rudarstva is housed in a former coal-processing building. It was established to preserve, protect and promote the mining heritage. The mining section includes coal-classification hoppers, mining tools, old photographs and documents, as well as multimedia presentations and recreated mine spaces. Visits to the museum must be arranged in advance by phone.

At St. Barbara Promenade, Rudar Ivek stands as a permanent tribute to the town’s miners. The sculpture was installed in June 2025 and is designed for interaction: visitors can sit beside it, take photos and read about the local mining heritage on the information panel. The miners’ monument in the central park was erected in 1952.

Promenade, Educational Trail and Nature by the Mura

The Mura Promenade in the town is suited to walks and cycling. Its facilities include the Curek drinking-water spring, information boards, sculptures and seating. There is also a large children’s playground, a summer stage, a shelter and outdoor exercise equipment. The promenade therefore offers both routes for exercise and a range of facilities and places to stop and rest.

The Mura Educational Trail was created by connecting the promenades of Sveti Martin and Mursko Središće. Information boards along the Mura route explain Fusek and the plant and animal life found in riverside habitats; some boards can be moved to different locations. Nearby, a ferry crossing over the Mura provides access to the natural areas of Napolitanke and Mali Balaton. Check the crossing’s current operating details before planning your visit.

Events and Buildings

Dan rudara is one of the town’s traditional events. The traditional festival of children’s amateur theatre, “Murski patuljci,” is also held in Mursko Središće. Check the dates for your travel period if you would like to plan your stay around an event.

The parish church of St. Ladislaus the King and St. Stephen dates from 1820. The group of wayside shrines dedicated to the Holy Trinity dates from 1807. Together with the miners’ monument and the Rudar Ivek sculpture, these buildings and memorial sites offer different points of reference for the town’s history.

Getting There

Mursko Središće is on the Čakovec–Lendava road and railway route. If you plan to travel by train, check current connections in advance. When choosing a hotel, you can also consider whether you want to focus your stay more on the museum visit, cultural events, or the routes and natural areas along the Mura.
