Otočac combines cultural sites with riverside paths and a longer cycling route. If you’re looking for a hotel in Otočac, you can start planning your trip around these different themes: architectural history, museums, the Gacka or outdoor activities. Each place and activity has its own focus; the details below will help you decide how they fit into your stay.

Fortica, the Church and the Town’s History

Fortica was built in 1619 to protect Otočac. It is one of only two surviving regular triangular towers in Croatia. Its construction date and rare tower shape give the fortress a specific place in the town’s history. From the foot of Fortica, 15 stone Stations of the Cross lead to a chapel near the summit. Together, the fortress, stations and chapel bring different historical and religious connections together in one place.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Otočac offers another perspective. The single-nave building combines Late Baroque and Neoclassical features and has a rectangular floor plan. The church is protected cultural property of the Republic of Croatia. At Gačanski Park of Croatian Memory, the focus is on a chronological sequence: it begins with Duke Borna and ends with the town of Otočac. While Fortica and the church speak through specific architectural forms, the park presents its themes chronologically. These different approaches may interest you if you’d like to learn about the town’s history.

The Gacka Museum: Exhibition and Current Access

Access to the Gacka Museum’s permanent exhibition is temporarily unavailable during a multi-year renovation project. Temporary exhibitions and other museum activities remain available in the building. The permanent exhibition is divided into six sections featuring objects from six museum collections. Its archaeological section includes around 300 artefacts dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. When planning your visit, it’s therefore important to distinguish between the permanent exhibition, which is currently inaccessible, and the activities that remain available in the building.

The Gacka and Riverside Paths

The Gacka is a slow-flowing karst river with abundant aquatic plant and animal life. Near Otočac, it flows into the Karlov kanal before joining the Lika River. By the river, the riverside path in Otočac offers several kilometres of walking and views of a stone bridge connecting the lower and upper parts of the town. Path conditions may change; check them before your visit. The river and riverside path offer a different focus for your trip than the historic buildings, without requiring you to plan a particular activity.

Cycling Route and Regional Access

The Jurjeve stijene cycling route starts at Kralja Zvonimira 34 in Otočac and is 42.4 kilometres long. Signposting and conditions may change; check them before setting off. The main difference between the two routes is the type of activity: a walk of several kilometres along the river or a 42.4-kilometre cycling route. Participants in the Gromkova Trail gather in Otočac’s town park. If you’re planning your trip around this event, check the date in advance.
