Brušane offers specific hiking options alongside cultural and historical attractions. The Brušane–Rizvanuša–Brušane trail begins in Brušani at the start of the climb to Takalica; another route starts at the end of Brušane below Takalica and leads to Konjevača. Local history includes St. Martin’s Church, historic roads and springs in the surrounding area.

Hiking Along Suvaja Creek

The Brušane–Rizvanuša–Brušane trail has a short 14-kilometre route and a long 24-kilometre route. After three kilometres along the trail, you reach Suvaja Creek. Beside the creek, a small covered wooden hut offers a place to stop and rest. Before setting out, check local trail conditions and whether the rest stop is in good condition.

Scenery Along the Trail

Along the route, you’ll find hawthorn, hornbeam, dog rose, hazel, black pine and beech. The vegetation ranges from shrubs to deciduous and coniferous trees. Paying attention to the plants along the trail gives you another specific way to connect with the landscape, in addition to the route distances.

Konjevača: Hiking Time and Views

The hiking ascent to Konjevača begins at the end of Brušane below Takalica. The uphill walk from Brušane to Konjevača takes approximately three and a half hours. Your pace and local conditions can affect the actual walking time; allow additional time for the return journey. In good visibility, the summit offers views towards almost all of the Velebit peaks. The extent of the view depends on the weather.

The two hiking trails offer different planning information: the Brušane–Rizvanuša–Brušane trail offers a choice of a short 14-kilometre route or a long 24-kilometre route, while an approximate uphill walking time is given for Konjevača. You can use distance and time requirements as different guides when planning your hikes.

Church of St. Martin

The Church of St. Martin the Bishop in Brušane is classified as immovable cultural property in the category of sacred architectural heritage. A pre-Ottoman church stood in ruins after the liberation of Lika; a new Church of St. Martin is mentioned towards the end of the 17th century. A Glagolitic inscription dated 1512 is located on the church’s stone threshold.

Historic Roads

The Karolinška Road from Gospić to Bag passed through Brušane. Another historic route is the Gospić–Karlobag road: it was built in 1787 and improved with switchback sections between 1844 and 1850. The two roads represent different historical routes—the Karolinška Road is directly connected to Brušane through its course, while the construction and improvement of the Gospić–Karlobag road are its defining features.

Springs in the Surrounding Area

There are several named springs around Brušane: Rimsko vrelo, Pavlinovo vrelo, Košna voda, Škvadra and Zobine. Rimsko vrelo is also considered attractive to tourists today. The springs add another nature-related aspect of the area to its hiking trails and plant life.
