The Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene is a cultural and historical landmark in Kuzminec. It stands beside the Radoboj–Mihovljan road, is a protected cultural asset designated Z-3513, and was first mentioned in 1456. Its architectural history includes several clearly dated changes, whose stages are easy to distinguish.

Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene: Architecture and Building Phases

The chapel is a stone, single-nave building with Gothic details and a partially open portico. A mural dated 1777 is located on the main façade above the outdoor altar. A wooden tower rises above the nave. The building form, portico, mural, and tower describe different aspects of the architecture: from the basic layout to individual features of the façade and roof area.

The dates also mark different stages. The chapel was commissioned by Magdalena Patačić and thoroughly restored in 1665. A sacristy was added in 1786. The building received new vaults in 1879, and a new roof and tower in 1912. The first mention in 1456, the restoration, and the later additions therefore do not refer to the same building phase, but to different stages in its history.

Local History in Kuzminec

There used to be a marketplace in front of the chapel. Thus, the former use of the square is also part of the town's historic character, alongside the building's history. A stone bridge on the Kuzminec–Mihovljan road is also recognized as local cultural heritage with the ZPP designation. The chapel and the bridge are two distinct landmarks in local history; their locations along the roads can be considered separately.

The Regional Setting: Općina Mihovljan

The chapel in Kuzminec is located within the broader travel destination of Općina Mihovljan. The municipality extends across the southern foothills of Ivanščica. Its landscape is shaped by the valleys running north–south along the waterways Sutinčica, also known as Sutinska, Graberje, and Šikad. The chapel's architectural history is part of Kuzminec's local history; the named valleys shape the landscape of Općina Mihovljan.

The protected landscape area “Sutinske toplice” is part of the region's natural setting. It is considered a significant landscape, covers 117.42 hectares, was protected in 1980, and extends across Općina Mihovljan and Općina Mače. The designated area therefore encompasses more than one municipality and is a distinct landmark in the region's landscape.

Other cultural and recreational features are also specifically associated with Općina Mihovljan. The municipality's infrastructure includes a promenade along the Sutinsko stream. KUD Mihovljan preserves Croatian folk heritage, particularly the traditions of its home region. The Ethno Collection “Stara mihovljanska hiža” is considered one of the recognized attractions of Općina Mihovljan.

The former Stari grad Mihovljan estate is also part of the municipality's historical heritage. Today, only a curia and an outbuilding remain on the hill; the outbuilding is in a ruinous condition. This historic site is another regional landmark, distinct from the buildings and local history in Kuzminec.

If you are looking for hotels in Kuzminec, distinguishing between these features can help with your travel planning: the chapel and bridge are cultural landmarks in the town; the landscape, promenade, and other cultural sites belong to the wider setting of Općina Mihovljan.
