Gornja Stubica is shaped by historic buildings, a striking monument and recurring festivals. Visitors planning a stay can get to know the place through these different themes: from the history of Oršić Castle and the Parish Church of St. George to celebrations connected with winemaking and local traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between permanent attractions and events that take place on recurring annual dates.

Oršić Castle and the Monument to Matija Gubec

The Baroque Oršić Castle was built in 1756 on the site of a medieval fortress. The castle houses the Museum of Peasant Revolts; the building also includes a Baroque chapel with illusionistic frescoes. The museum is currently closed for restoration work on the building and a new exhibition, and is expected to remain closed until spring 2027. Keep this period in mind when planning your stay.

Next to the castle stands the monument to Matija Gubec: the statue is 6.5 metres tall and is flanked by two wings, each 20 metres long. Their bronze reliefs depict more than 300 figures and scenes from the Battle of Stubica. Antun Augustinčić created the monument; it was completed in 1973 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Peasant Revolt. Its large-scale design and historical scenes make it a distinctive destination for anyone interested in the history of the revolt.

Parish Church of St. George and Gupčeva Lipa

The Parish Church of St. George is mentioned in records from 1209 and 1340. The parish has been recorded since 1334, and the oldest description of the church dates from 1622. Inside are three Baroque altars and a pulpit; the main altar was installed in 1740. The bells also reflect different periods: the church has five electric bells, including one from 1713 that weighs around 900 kilograms.

Gupčeva Lipa stands right next to the church. The linden tree is over 400 years old, about nine metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 4.70 metres. It has been protected as a natural monument since 1957 and is also protected as a cultural monument. A landscaped park is located near the museum; a one-kilometre footpath leads to the tree. The ancient tree and the town’s architectural heritage thus offer distinct, clearly defined points of interest.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Vincekovo is celebrated in Gornja Stubica every January as a traditional festival honouring Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winemakers and wine. The programme begins with a Mass at the Chapel of St. Vincent in Modrovec. The festival also marks the start of work in the vineyards and promotes wines from the Stubica area. The chapel stands on a hill above the village, among vineyards, and is built in the Classical Baroque style.

Another annual event is Jurjevo, a multi-day festival held around 23 April at Gupčeva Lipa. The programme includes exhibitions, folklore performances, children’s folklore, concerts, religious services and the lighting of a bonfire in honour of St. George. As the festival takes place at a specific time in spring, it can help you choose when to travel if you would like to plan your trip around a cultural event.

Susreti za Rudija is held every year in honour of pilot Rudolf Perešin and combines aviation, cultural and entertainment programmes. The Rudolf Perešin Memorial Park in Gornja Stubica includes a statue of the pilot and a preserved MiG-21. The event and the memorial park offer different points of interest: one is a recurring event, while the other is a permanent memorial complex. Check the event dates for the year you plan to visit Gornja Stubica before travelling.

You can plan your stay around your interests: the castle and monument focus on the history of the Peasant Revolt, the church and linden tree bring together architectural and natural heritage, while Vincekovo and Jurjevo mark set dates in the annual calendar.
