Donja Stubica: Cultural History, Hiking Trails and Thermal Water
Accommodation in Donja Stubica
Donja Stubica offers cultural and historical attractions, a hiking route on Medvednica and activities centred around thermal water. For planning your trip, these topics can be considered separately: historic buildings shape the cultural side of your stay, while trails and leisure activities offer their own ways to plan your days.
Cultural History in Donja Stubica
The late Baroque Stubički Golubovec Castle is considered one of Croatia’s most valuable castles and is designated a cultural and natural asset of national importance. Its landscaped grounds include a park to the north, park woodlands to the west and south, and the Vilinske poljane meadows. The castle grounds therefore encompass a range of landscape features that help shape the character of the estate.
The Church of the Holy Trinity has been documented since 1346. It features a Gothic sanctuary dating from the 15th century and preserves wall paintings from the same period. Historic liturgical objects include a 16th-century chalice and a 19th-century monstrance. Several historical periods thus come together at the church: its early documentation, Gothic furnishings and objects from later centuries.
The story of Eugen Viktor Feller is also connected with Donja Stubica. In 1899, he owned the Holy Trinity Pharmacy in the town. In 1901, Feller established a factory laboratory in a newly built Neo-Baroque building next to the church; the building was protected in 1994. Likovna galerija Drempetić has been active in Donja Stubica since 1988.
Another historical topic is brought to life by the Seljačka Buna – Bitka kod Stubice event. It takes place annually in early February. At the 2026 edition, the 1573 uprising was reenacted in the town centre. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Hiking Trails and Thermal Water
Hiking trail 37, also known as Sljemenski put, runs from Donja Stubica along the Medvednica ridge to the Hunjka mountain lodge. It is 6.1 kilometres long and rated moderate (4/5). Its length and rating provide a clear guide for planning your hike. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Other outdoor activities in Donja Stubica include the Gupčevim krajem–Pasanska Gorica hiking and cycling trail, a tennis court and a fitness park. Near Terme Jezerčica, Grad labirinata has nine themed mazes designed for visitors to walk through. As well as the named hiking route, you’ll find other leisure activities that differ considerably in nature.
Hotel Terme JezerÄŤica is located at a source of natural healing thermal water. The swimming pools at Terme JezerÄŤica comprise eight natural thermal-water pools adapted for all generations. As facilities can change, it is advisable to check the current status of the pools before your visit.
Horse Riding and Regional Dining
Ranch Zara is a family-run business in Donja Stubica that has worked with horses since 2012 and offers recreational horse riding on land with views across the hills of Zagorje. The city’s wine offerings have a different focus: OPG Dario Poštek runs a wine cellar and tasting room in Stubički Kamenjak. Lunch and group gatherings are available by prior reservation. If you plan to take advantage of these arrangements, let them know about your visit in good time and check the options again before you arrive.
