Grabovnica: Churches, airfield and Salaj estate
Accommodation in Grabovnica
Grabovnica brings together several distinct themes: churches with their own architectural histories, an airfield with an open-air exhibition, the Salaj estate with seasonal programs, and routes from ČazmaGravel. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Grabovnica, these highlights can help with your planning: first decide whether cultural history, military exhibits, a seasonal experience or the routes are especially important to your trip.
Churches and architectural history
The Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was built in 1905 or 1906 with contributions from Catholic and Orthodox villagers. It was extensively restored for its centenary. Its history therefore includes both the community’s shared support for its construction and a later restoration.
The Church of the Prophet Amos – St Lazarus of Kosovo was built in 1868, replacing an older wooden chapel on St Vid Hill. Its walls were decorated with frescoes. After the tower roof collapsed around 2008, it was reconstructed. The church’s building history thus spans several distinct periods: the older chapel, the construction of the church and the later restoration of the roof.
Airfield and open-air exhibition
Grabovnica Airfield was built in 1986 as an agricultural airfield. It is a destination for visitors interested in military exhibits. A report dated January 17, 2025, lists a Lockheed T-33 and a MiG 21 BIS as part of the open-air exhibition. The MiG 21 BIS took an active part in the Croatian War of Independence. The report also describes the exhibition as open year-round and free of charge. Check visitor access and entry conditions before your trip, as these may change.
The Salaj estate at Christmas and Easter
The Salaj family estate includes an old watermill wheel, a waterfall on the Grabovnica River, lakes, bridges and paths. The combination of these different elements gives the estate its distinctive landscape character. A 2007 postcard from the Town Museum links it with the Salaj Family Christmas Story, which featured multicolored lights during the Christmas season. The program’s name and presentation may change.
The estate also offers a seasonal setting at Easter, with multicolored lights and Easter eggs. The Easter program includes performances, games for children and local food. If you plan to travel for this program, check the dates and program details in advance; opening arrangements may also vary. Christmas and Easter therefore offer different seasonal reasons to visit the estate.
ČazmaGravel routes and orientation
The ČazmaGravel routes are circular and can be joined at any point. ČazmaGravel 1 leads to Grabovnica after passing through Vagovina and Bojana; along the way, the route passes an airfield, a bioenergy plant and a farm. ČazmaGravel 2 reaches Grabovnica, turns left at a chapel and then also passes an airfield, a bioenergy plant and a farm.
The landmarks described distinguish the two routes: Route 1 mentions Vagovina and Bojana, while Route 2 mentions the chapel where you turn left. Both routes are circular and can be joined at various points.
