Cultural sites and building history
Sutivan’s historic center is protected under Croatian law as a cultural monument. In this context, Put crikve stands out: the street is considered Sutivan’s only surviving authentic Kongul street and is paved with round pebbles. The Kavanjin mansion in Sutivan was built between 1690 and 1705. The Latin inscription OSTIVM NON HOSTIVM can be seen on the southern doorpost of the Kavanjin summer house. During the Sutivan Summer Festival, the courtyard of the summer house is used as a performance venue.
The votive church of St. Roch, built in 1635, stands on St. Roko Hill near Sutivan. Underground tombs known as catacombs, rare on Brač, are located near the church. On Timunić Beach is Japjenka, a rare, partly preserved monument to traditional dry-stone construction. The structure was used to produce lime for building stone houses.
The former use of wind and water is also evident at named sites. The tower of the former windmill of the Ilić family dates from the early 19th century and is considered the best-preserved of the 125 wheat mills operating on Brač around 1800. Lokvice is Sutivan’s largest gustirda, a water-collecting structure. Until Brač was supplied with water from the Cetina River, it was an important source of drinking water for the town.
Festivals, exhibitions and local cuisine
Sutivan’s major religious celebrations include the parish feast on August 15 and the Fiera of St. Roch on August 16. The exact program varies from year to year. Municipality Day on June 24 is traditionally marked with folk and church celebrations. Sutivan is also known for the summer extreme-sports festival “Vanka Regule”; dates vary by year.
On August 4, 2026, a monument to the emigrants of Brač and Dr. Antonio Rendić Ivanović was erected in Sutivan’s central public park. An interactive kiosk on the waterfront covers the interpretation project for the underwater shipwreck. The municipality reported on it in July 2024; check on site whether the kiosk is operating. Smaller artifacts from the ancient shipwreck, including a bone gaming die, are exhibited in Sutivan’s public library. Check the current exhibition arrangements before visiting.
“Artičoke s bobom” is considered one of Sutivan’s most significant dishes. Along with the feast days, historic townscape and trails, it offers a range of different themes to consider when planning your trip.
