South Kivu can be explored through three distinct natural highlights: Kahuzi-Biega National Park, the Itombwe Nature Reserve and Idjwi Island. Each offers a different focus: wildlife and protected areas, mountain landscapes, or an island perspective. Attractions in the wider Lake Kivu and Lake Tanganyika area round out the picture. You can weigh up whether wildlife viewing, activities in the reserve, the island’s mountainous terrain or lakeside attractions best match your travel interests.

Kahuzi-Biega: World Heritage and Wildlife

Kahuzi-Biega National Park covers almost 6,000 km² and lies in the provinces of South Kivu, North Kivu and Maniema. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. The park is therefore a nature destination in South Kivu, although its area also extends across several provinces. In the wider destination of the Congo, the park’s headquarters and tourist area are 30 km from Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu.

Alongside gorillas, the park is home to forest elephants, chimpanzees, endemic Congo peafowl, okapis and more than 350 bird species. Species inventories may change as new surveys are conducted. The park is also considered the last natural habitat of the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), also known as Grauer’s gorilla. Wildlife is therefore a distinct planning focus alongside the UNESCO designation; Grauer’s gorilla is specifically identified as a conservation priority.

Itombwe: Mountain Landscapes and Activities

The Itombwe Nature Reserve extends across the Itombwe Massif and the Mitumba mountain range. The forests of the Itombwe Mountains include vegetation ranging from rainforests to grassland formations. The terrain and changing vegetation shape a landscape that differs from the species profile of Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

Activities listed for the reserve include observing Grauer’s gorillas and birds, hiking, visiting Pygmy camps, discovering waterfalls and caves, and learning about local traditions. The range covers everything from wildlife viewing and physical activity to cultural themes; you can prioritize these according to your travel interests.

Visits to the Itombwe Nature Reserve must be reserved at least 15 days in advance. Reservations depend on availability and the reserve’s access conditions. As reservation conditions may change, confirm them directly with the reserve before planning your visit.

Idjwi and the Lakes Region

Idjwi is an island in South Kivu, about 70 km long and mountainous, with elevations reaching 2,300 m. The island’s length and elevation give it a different landscape focus from Itombwe’s forests and grassland formations. Choosing between protected areas and an island perspective therefore means focusing on different natural and landscape themes.

In the wider regional area around Lakes Kivu and Tanganyika, visitor attractions include developed beaches in Bukavu and Uvira, panoramic cruises and water sports. This lakeside focus differs from the mountainous protected areas and Idjwi’s terrain. If water sports or panoramic trips match your travel interests, you can include these regional attractions alongside the natural areas when choosing your themes.
