Mosques, caves, waterfalls and classified forests give Hauts-Bassins a varied character. Museums and community cultural sites add to the mix. Travelers can choose between religious buildings, caves and rock art, places shaped by craftsmanship, and natural sites. The destinations are spread across different locations in the region. First decide which themes interest you most, and check current visiting arrangements before planning a visit.

Mosques, museums and cultural sites

In Bobo Dioulasso, the Mosquée de Dioulassoba and Les silures sacrés de Dafra are among the tourist sites. Another mosque in this selection is La vieille Mosquée de Faramana in Faramana; in Boni, the Cathédrale de Boni is among the tourist sites. Together, the mosques and a cathedral form a religious focus within the region’s selection of destinations.

The region’s two museums in Bobo-Dioulasso are the Musée communal Sogossira Sanou and the Musée de la musique d'hier et d'aujourd'hui. The latter is a private museum. Visitors interested in caves and rock art will find several other themes: Les Grottes aux vestiges in Koundougou, les grottes de Kuini in Djigouèra, les Grottes de Dohoun in Houndé and les Grottes de Gombledougou in Koumbia each put their own place names on the map. The gravures rupestres de Wempéa in Toussiana add rock engravings to this selection. Also included are the Mausolée Tiéfo Amoro in Péni and Les Hauts Fourneaux d Bekuy in Bekuy.

Water sites, hills and forests

The natural sites also offer different starting points for planning a trip. The Barrage de Samadéni is in Bama, and the Source mystérieuse d’eau de Tijo is in Fo. Two waterfalls complete the picture: Les chutes d’eau de Dinkoua are in K. Sambla, and Les Chutes d’eau de Banfoulaguè are in Kourinion. The names Mare aux hippopotames de Bala in Satiri and Mare aux hippopotames de Banzon in Banzon also point to water sites.

The Colline Wango Kourou in K. Vigué and Mont Kagnangnè in Koloko add hills and mountains to the mix. The forêt classée de Dindéresso in Dinderosso and the forêt classée de la Mou in Mou are classified as public natural sites. The selection thus includes water, landforms and classified forests, although not all natural sites can be described in the same way. When planning a nature-focused trip, you can first decide whether you would rather include water sites, landforms or forests.

Community cultural sites

Several places are classified as community cultural sites. These include the village artisanal de Pala in Pala and the village perché de Koréba in Koreba. The Quartier des potières de Morolaba in Morolaba adds a place name explicitly associated with craftsmanship to this selection. In Mahon, the pilgrimage destination “Dopre 3” is a community cultural site.

The marigot sacré de Kourion in Kourion is also classified as both a community cultural site and a natural site. Kourouma has two differently classified sites: Le Bosquet Sacré de Kourouma is a tourist site, while the palais royal de Kourouma is a private cultural site. These distinctions help categorize the region’s cultural sites by theme, without treating them as equivalent places to visit.

Burkina Faso: Blacksmithing traditions and architecture

At the level of the wider travel destination, Burkina Faso also offers a nationwide cultural context. In Yamané, Kindibo and Douroula, living blacksmithing traditions are linked to the symbolic values of ironworking. Blacksmiths there preserve inherited rites and social practices and play an important role in their communities. These traditions give metalworking a contemporary cultural dimension.

Another architectural landmark in Burkina Faso is the royal court of Tiébélé. The earthen architectural complex combines earth, wood, cow dung and straw. Its spatial, social and functional layout is determined by the status of its inhabitants; the roles of men and women in its construction are also among its characteristics. Building techniques, different architectural forms and decoration also shape the complex. Thus, from a broader nationwide perspective, living blacksmithing traditions, earthen construction and court architecture sit alongside the cultural and natural sites of Hauts-Bassins.
