Mezdra: Kaleto, Rock Art and the Iskar Landscape
Accommodation in Mezdra
Mezdra combines a long archaeological history with striking rock landscapes and other cultural sites in the municipality. A distinctive starting point for exploring the past is the Kaleto Archaeological Complex, situated on a high, rocky ridge above the left bank of the Iskar in southwestern Mezdra. The gorge, the rock art and the municipality’s historic sites each offer a different focus.
Kaleto: Archaeology on the Rocky Ridge
Finds and remains on Kaleto Hill date from the Copper Age to the Middle Ages. The early settlement is particularly complex: traces remain here of two successive fortified settlements dating to the Late Copper Age and the transition from the Eneolithic to the Bronze Age. The hill is also home to a prehistoric aurochs shrine, considered unique in Bulgaria.
Kaleto was restored in 2013 as part of the “History, Culture and Nature – Tourist Attractions of Mezdra” project and converted into a tourist attraction. The permanent exhibition features a model of the Roman and Late Antique fortress, as well as archaeological remains from five historical periods. The complex also includes workshops for local crafts, an information centre and a souvenir shop. Archery and experiences with working medieval siege engines add an active dimension to the archaeological focus.
For getting your bearings: Kaleto is next to the E-79 main road and has a car park.
Iskar Gorge, Rocks and Trails
The Iskar Gorge is characterised by striking white limestone cliffs. Activities listed there include hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, hang gliding and other extreme sports. The options range from trails on foot to activities in the air; which ones suit your trip depends on your own plans.
The Rittlite natural landmark in Mezdra Municipality consists of limestone formations on both banks of the Iskar. The rocks rise up to 80 metres above the river. Nearby is Rashov Dol, a memorial site associated with the deaths of ten members of Botev’s company. A small tomb contains their remains. The Baba Iliitsa Trail leads from Rashov Dol across the Iskar, through Prosechen Kamak and onward to Cherepish Monastery.
At the Rittlite Visitor Centre in Lyutibrod, you can find information about natural and tourist attractions, nearby accommodation, maps and souvenirs; educational activities and films about nature conservation are also available. The exhibition includes a three-dimensional model of the Iskar Gorge, a digital model of the hiking trails in the Vratsa Balkan, and 3D projections. The Belite Skali eco-trail near Lyutibrod is listed as taking about an hour.
Cultural Heritage in Mezdra Municipality
In Tsarevets stands the Church of St Nicholas, a 13th- to 14th-century building and one of the few surviving structures from that period. It was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 1972. The church also served as a fortified refuge. Its distinctive features include Bulgaria’s only surviving built iconostasis and remnants of wall paintings.
The Shuplovitsa rock art gallery is located near Tsarevets. The massif features more than 700 rock carvings and about 30 shallow caves; the gallery is also a cultural monument of national importance. The images depict, among other things, plants, birds, animals and people from prehistoric times. Other motifs include the largest deer petroglyph found in Bulgaria and medieval depictions associated with Tsar Ivan Shishman.
The Ochin Dol Trail also brings together nature and regional themes. It passes through pine forest and open meadows; its displays cover local history, customs, sacred sites, plants and animals. Along the trail are a wooden children’s house, an outdoor school, a spring, a fountain and viewpoints. The trail is considered suitable for children over eight. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.
In Ochin Dol, the Dado Yotso Complex includes a five-metre-high statue inspired by Vazov, a flower garden, a viewing pavilion, a tavern serving traditional Bulgarian dishes, a wooden house, a spring-water fountain and rest areas. If you plan to visit the tavern, check in advance whether the option you want is available.
Cultural Events and Rural Character
Kaleto’s event calendar includes an annual re-enactment of Dionysian rites associated with vines and wine on 13 February, as well as a festival of medieval traditions, ways of life and culture in May. Check the dates and whether the events will take place before you travel. In rural parts of the municipality, small private and cooperative farms produce meat, milk, wine and honey. Agricultural produce thus complements the region’s archaeological and scenic attractions.
