Arbanasi combines a rich architectural and ecclesiastical history with opportunities for sightseeing and a range of activities. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on historic homes, church art, or an additional experience. The village is situated on a high plateau, about 4 km from Veliko Tarnovo. Its homes and churches span several centuries, offering visitors a range of cultural points of interest.

Historic Homes and Defensive Features

The Konstantsaliev and Hadzhiiliev houses are among the important residential architectural monuments dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. There are also fortified houses surrounded by high stone walls. Residential buildings and defensive architecture are thus two aspects of the village’s historic character. Their dates also differ from those of the churches: the houses mentioned date from the 17th and 18th centuries, while church construction goes back to earlier centuries.

Church Art Spanning Several Centuries

Seven churches were built in Arbanasi between the mid-16th and late 18th centuries, repeatedly enlarged, and decorated with frescoes. The village’s churches therefore do not belong to a single period of construction. The murals in the Nativity Church cover more than 2,000 square metres. At St George Church, an inscription records 1709 as the year the wall paintings were completed. The two churches offer different points of comparison: at the Nativity Church, the scale of the paintings stands out, while at St George Church, it is the recorded year of completion.

Planning Visits and Activities

Individual paid sites can be visited year-round. Access arrangements at each site may change, so check the conditions for the specific site before your visit. Guides from the Regional Historical Museum are available to visitors who wish to tour the architectural reserve.

If you plan to take one of these routes, confirm availability before travelling. Carriage rides are also available and can be used for balls and weddings.

Hotels, Accommodation, and Getting There

Arbanasi has hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants. St Nicholas Monastery also offers accommodation and remains an active nunnery. If you are considering staying there, confirm availability before travelling; you should also check access in advance if you plan to visit the religious site.
