Omurtag lies in the eastern Fore-Balkan between the Tuzluka area and the Gerlovo Basin. Historical collections, architectural and cultural history, and aviation are key themes for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Omurtag, you can plan your trip around the aspects of the town that interest you most.

Museum and the History of the Town

The Historical Museum of Omurtag developed in two stages: it began as a museum collection in 1973 and became a historical museum in 1994. Its exhibits are housed in three restored buildings. The displays range from archaeological traces to objects from everyday urban life.

The archaeology hall displays evidence that the Omurtag area was inhabited around seven thousand years ago. The ethnographic exhibition presents urban clothing, furniture and textiles. Another exhibit is the spacesuit of Bulgarian cosmonaut Alexander Alexandrov. These themes offer different perspectives: early settlement, everyday culture and spaceflight.

Church and Architectural Heritage

The Church of St. Dimitar is a three-aisled basilica. The term describes a church interior with three naves. The church was designated a monument of art on 17 December 1971 and an architectural monument on 3 September 1972. The two dates refer to different monument categories, not to the year it was built. The building’s design and its designations thus offer two different perspectives on the church.

The surviving heritage of the old town also includes the Menzilishka Fountain, dating from 1779, six Revival-period houses, and the house of Baba Ivanka Hadzhiykata, built in 1876. This house is the last representative residential building to survive from old Osman Pazar. The Otec Paisiy Community Center was built in 1870 and developed into an established cultural institution for the local community. The fountain, houses and community center add further chapters to the town’s history alongside the church.

Aviation and Other Historical Connections

An Aviation Park opened at the entrance to Omurtag in 2008. It displays aircraft and other equipment formerly used by the Bulgarian Air Force. This offers a different perspective on aviation from the spacesuit in the Historical Museum: here the focus is on former military technology, while the museum exhibit provides a personal connection to spaceflight. Both themes extend the visitor’s perspective beyond the town’s architectural and everyday history.

Transport and Regional Context

The I-4 road bypasses Omurtag to the north and carries much of the heavy and transit traffic. If you are travelling by car, knowing that the road serves as both a bypass and a regional transport route can help you find your way.

In the tourism framework, Omurtag Municipality is assigned to the eastern subregion of the Stara Planina region. At municipal level, the landscape is shaped by hilly foothills and low mountains. The mixed forests include oaks, hornbeams, beeches and silver lindens, among other species. These landscape and woodland features describe Omurtag Municipality and add specific characteristics to its regional context.
