Antonovo offers several specific highlights to consider when planning your trip: nature by the water, architectural history and local culture. At the Yastrebino Reservoir, the focus is on beach areas, fishing and water sports; the Roman Bridge, art in Bozhitsa and the traditional fair offer other points of interest. Consider whether you would like to spend your stay mainly enjoying activities on the water, exploring cultural history or visiting in June.

Nature by the water and in the hilly landscape

The shores of the Yastrebino Reservoir have suitable beach areas, as well as opportunities for fishing and water sports. The hilly area around the Golyama Reka offers opportunities for excursions in almost untouched nature and for fishing. Unlike the reservoir, where beaches and water sports take centre stage, the hilly landscape is the defining feature here; fishing is possible at both locations.

Another natural attraction is the Pirineshki Dzhendem Waterfall. A 2022 tourism report describes it as 34 metres high, easily accessible, signposted and well maintained. Check local conditions before your visit.

Architecture and cultural routes

The Roman Bridge over the Stara Reka is an important architectural and historical monument with six semicircular arches. It is 7 kilometres from the village of Stevrek. For those interested in cultural history, it brings together a distinctive architectural form and historic monument status. The bridge is also part of the “Sredna Yantra” eco-zone, which extends across the municipalities of Antonovo, Strazhitsa and Zlataritsa. This ecological context broadens the perspective from a single structure to a regional area.

According to a 2019 description, the bridge can only be reached on foot and must be visited with a local guide because the terrain is difficult to access. Check local access conditions and the structure’s condition before your visit.

The Antonovo–Stevrek tourist route also includes a cultural attraction: the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Stevrek. It adds a religious building to the route’s points of interest.

Art and local tradition

The Yanaki Manasiev House Museum and Art Gallery in Bozhitsa display a permanent exhibition of the artist’s works. The house museum exhibits drawings, sketches, oil paintings and the artist’s personal belongings. This combination of artworks and personal objects offers a different way to explore culture than the architecture and its history. Opening arrangements may change; check the visiting details in advance.

According to local tradition, the traditional Antonovo fair takes place in June. If you are planning your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance.

Yastrebino is also home to the base of the Regional STEM Centre, where reservations are available. If you would like to include this in your trip plans, allow for a reservation.
