Samokov combines the history of an important art school from the Bulgarian National Revival with craft traditions and historic churches. Its location in the Rila Mountains and Rila National Park is also part of the town’s character. When choosing a hotel in Samokov, you can consider whether cultural history or activities in the mountain region should be the focus of your trip.

Art and Craft Traditions

Samokov’s development is linked to large mechanical hammers, known as samokovi, which were used in iron production. Together with livestock farming, ironworking contributed to a diverse craft tradition. This included more than 300 wheels used to make woven goods and 40 aba workshops. These figures give an impression of the breadth of local trades at the time.

Another important facet is the Samokov art school. Its painters, icon painters, copper engravers and woodcarvers created works for churches and monasteries. Goldsmithing and clockmaking were also part of the craft heritage. The town’s art history is therefore not limited to painting: it also includes sculpture and crafts, as well as their connection with religious buildings.

Churches and Museum

Belyova Church is the oldest Christian church in Samokov. It stands on the foundations of a late antique basilica dating from the 4th to the 6th century. Nikola Obrazopisov and his assistants created the wall paintings and icons; the iconostasis was made by Samokov woodcarvers. This building thus brings together local art history and the town’s religious architectural tradition.

The Shroud of Holy Mary Nunnery was founded in 1772 by Fota of Samokov, who donated her own house to the monastery. The monastery church was built between 1837 and 1839. In the 19th century, the monastery developed an extensive educational program. The church contains icons attributed to Dimitar Zograf. A mural in the porch is believed to be by Zahari Zograf.

The Historical Museum in Samokov was founded in 1936 through the work of local artists. It organizes temporary exhibitions and other events related to its focus. As the program may change, check in advance which exhibitions or events are scheduled during your travel dates.
