Nedelino combines a distinctive tradition of two-part singing with the Rhodope landscape. Trails, a Thracian sanctuary, a cave landscape, and historic routes complete the picture of the area. The town lies on the Nedelinska River; Nedelino Municipality is located in the central southern part of the Middle Rhodopes. Elevations within the municipality range from 450 to 1,200 meters. As a municipality in southern Bulgaria, Nedelino belongs to Smolyan Province.

Rhodope Landscape and Special Places

Belite Kamani, locally called Beloto Kamene, combines a 12-kilometer eco-trail and a cycling track with a Thracian sun sanctuary and expansive views of the Eastern Rhodopes. The landscape, route, and place of worship each give this place its own distinct character. Those interested in the area’s nature will also find two protected areas associated with Nedelino Municipality: Sveta Nedelya covers 21.129 hectares within the municipalities of Zlatograd and Nedelino; Godumska Dupka covers 4.8 hectares within Nedelino Municipality.

Bezdnik Waterfall lies in the rocky bed of the Tiklenska River below the village of Burevo, along the old road to Garnati.

Trails with Different Features

The Roman Road–Omarevi Kolibi trail follows part of the old route toward Greece and the Aegean Sea. The start and end points are at the Nedelino Tourist Information Center. The route therefore connects a historic path with a starting point in town.

The eco-trail to the protected cave site of Godumova Dupka runs about 3.6 kilometers from the Tourist Information Center and includes four equipped rest areas. The Nedelino–Sveta Nedelya trail is 1,889 meters long, ends at the summit, and has five rest areas. The approximately 3.6-kilometer cave trail is longer than the 1,889-meter trail to the summit. Check local information on trail conditions before setting out.

Sveta Nedelya Peak is 865 meters high and offers expansive views of nearby mountain features, Samothrace, and the Aegean Sea. South of the town are the ruins of an old fortress and the Sveta Nedelya Monastery. Those looking for viewpoints and historic sites on a map will find several distinct destinations around Nedelino.

Two-Part Singing and Annual Festivals

Nedelino’s two-part singing is considered a local Rhodope tradition unique to the area. The songs use fourths and seconds. Around 350 Nedelino two-part songs have been collected and notated; since 2017, the tradition has been taught as a subject at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv.

Nedelino hosts a national festival of two-part singing and folk songs with international participation. It is usually held on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in September. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates for that year’s event.

Traditional customs are also tied to specific dates. Nasha Marta is celebrated annually on March 14: a large fire is the focus, and people jump over it for health. Adralec, Nedelino’s name for Gergyovden, falls on May 6. The three-day celebration includes a communal meal, ritual singing with wreaths, and wading in the river. Gergyovden celebrations are also held at the historic Turčin Bridge, an emblematic place in Nedelino. The public presentation of customs and festivals may vary.

Museum and Cuisine

The Nedelino Museum displays authentic objects, clothing, and household items from the town’s everyday life and history. It offers a different way to explore the local past than the singing tradition: here, the focus is on objects from daily life.

Traditional Nedelino dishes include Goskina chorba, Klin, and Pilaf. Shulki is a homemade drink made from dried fruit. The dishes and drinks on offer depend on local hosts and events.
