The wider Kaspichan destination brings cultural history and nature together, from archaeological sites and museums to nature trails and protected areas. First consider which visits you want to shape your trip; this will help you tailor your search for hotels in Kaspichan to your own plans.

Cultural History in Kaspichan Municipality

The Pliska National Historical and Archaeological Reserve preserves the remains of Bulgaria’s first capital. At the complex’s museum, visitors can learn more about the daily life and the material and spiritual culture of the local population from the 7th to the 10th century. The exhibition complements the preserved historic sites with information about how people lived during this period.

Sights in Pliska include the East Gate, the throne hall, also known as the so-called Omurtag Palace, and the remains of the so-called Small Palace. The Great Basilica is considered the largest Christian temple and is dated to the late 9th century. These sites offer visitors different ways to engage with history, from the remains of the capital to individual buildings and their religious significance.

The Kalugeritsa Ethnographic House offers a different cultural perspective. It was built in 1877 in Kalugeritsa, now a district of Kaspichan. The house is home to a private ethnographic collection registered with the Shumen Regional Historical Museum. Visitors can experience an authentic folk ensemble of 14 women singing a cappella, without instrumental accompaniment. Before your trip, confirm whether the performance is scheduled during your stay; if needed, also check the collection’s current institutional affiliation.

Madara: Archaeology and Landscape

In the wider Kaspichan destination, the Madara National Historical and Archaeological Reserve brings archaeological monuments together with nature and the Madara Rider rock relief. Visitor services include a museum, guided visits and road access. Facilities for visitors also include a hut, guest houses and a restaurant. As access arrangements and facilities may change, check the current visitor information in advance.

Trails and Nature in Kaspichan Municipality

The Saint Kirik nature trail is about seven kilometres long; the route is listed as taking around three hours and having a moderate difficulty level. It starts at a designated rest area in Kireka and loops back to the starting point. Its length, approximate duration and difficulty level can help you plan how much time to allow for this outing. The Kireka nature trail has a meeting point in the centre of the Kalugeritsa district in Kaspichan. If you are planning a specific outing date, check the date and availability in advance.

Nature and cultural history also meet at individual sites in the municipality. Tumnata Dupka is a natural cave modified by people and used by Hesychast monks in the 12th to 14th centuries. The Great Rock Tomb is carved into the rock in a rectangular shape and has two burial troughs. The cave and the tomb differ in their history and form; both offer another glimpse into traces of human use of the landscape.

Nature attractions in the wider Kaspichan destination include the “Madarski skalni ventsi” protected area, with land in Kaspichan Municipality near Kyuvecha, and the “Kaniona” protected area in the Kaspichan area. “Kaniona” was designated to protect nationally significant plant species. In 2024, Kaspichan Municipality funded new markers and signs for the nature trail on the Madara Plateau. Also in 2024, an outdoor recreation, sports and tourism area was established in Kireka.
