The municipality of Ivanovo has natural and cultural attractions in several locations. For your planning, it is worth keeping the destinations in mind individually: the rock churches developed near the village of Ivanovo; other locations described here are Tabachka, Koshov, Cherven, Bozhichen and Nisovo.

Rock Churches and Medieval Heritage

Near the village of Ivanovo, a complex of churches, chapels, monasteries and cells carved into the rock was created. The 14th-century wall paintings attest to the exceptional skill of the artists of the Tarnovo School of Painting. If you are interested in rock architecture and medieval painting, you will find a distinct cultural theme here to include in your travel plans.

Cherven is also associated with medieval history: the town fortress lies in Rusenski Lom Nature Park and is an archaeological reserve. There is also a specific route description for Cherven. The 2 km historical circular route starts at the car park in front of the fortress in the village of Cherven and leads up steps to the fortress entrance. Along the way, you can see niches carved into the rocks for saltpetre extraction. A guide from the Regional Museum of History in Ruse is permanently available at the fortress. The route’s length, steps and niches give it a different character from a visit focused primarily on the rock paintings.

Churches, Finds and Traditions in the Villages

In Tabachka, the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God was built in 1862. It has 82 icons by masters of the Trevna School and houses a museum with liturgical books donated by the Russian tsar’s family. The “Vodna” cave, where prehistoric finds dating to 4300 BC were discovered, is also near Tabachka. These two dates mark distinct historical focal points: the 19th-century church building and the much older archaeological finds.

In Koshov, the Gramovets rock monastery complex is one of the archaeological attractions. The village’s cultural life includes a women’s folk group with 12 members and a men’s amateur ensemble with 20 members. The old “Dzhamal” ritual is also reenacted there. Archaeological remains and local traditions therefore sit side by side in Koshov, without requiring a specific event date.

Landscapes and Trails in Rusenski Lom Nature Park

Bozhichen lies along the picturesque gorge section of the Cherni Lom River. Rock formations and caves shape the description of this natural attraction. There are numerous caves and cells in the riverside cliffs; one of these rock sites is called “Tsarkvata” and has surviving fragments of frescoes. Bozhichen thus combines landscape features with another cultural landmark.

Three hiking trails are described for Nisovo, marked in the area by the Directorate of Rusenski Lom Nature Park. The village is also home to an elm tree about 700 years old, believed to date from the Second Bulgarian Empire. The trails and the elm offer different points of interest if you would like to include natural and cultural landscapes in your trip.

Rusenski Lom Nature Park covers parts of the areas of Svalenik, Shtraklevo, Nisovo, Cherven and Koshov in the municipality of Ivanovo. The stated park area also includes the village of Pisanets in the municipality of Vetovo, Ruse Province. The different location references help you assign natural and cultural attractions to their specific locations when planning.

Plan Your Journey and Hotel Search

The municipal centre in Ivanovo can be reached via the Ruse–Sofia motorway, a fourth-class road from Ruse to Dve Mogili, and the Ruse–Sofia railway. For your specific journey, it is worth checking road and rail connections before setting off. The municipality thus offers several ways to arrive as a starting point for your planning; the right option for you depends on how you would like to travel.
