Discover Pleven: Museums, History and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Pleven
Pleven offers several distinct themes for a stay: museums and art, the history of Storgozia, memorial sites, and outdoor routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Pleven, it helps to decide in advance which of these themes matter most. This lets you plan according to whether you are primarily interested in exhibitions, archaeological sites or walks.
Museums and Art in Pleven
The Regional Historical Museum features exhibitions on archaeology and ethnography, Bulgarian history from the 15th to the 19th century, and modern and contemporary history. Other topics include Gena Dimitrova and natural history. The museum is housed in an architecturally remarkable building designated a cultural monument of national significance.
The “Tsar Alexander II Liberator” House Museum displays the hussar uniform of Tsar Alexander II and personal belongings of General M. D. Skobelev. Its guest room retains the authentic furnishings in which Tsar Alexander II was received. The Svetlin Rusev Donation Collection Art Gallery is housed in a former bathhouse designated an architectural cultural monument of national significance.
In 1984, Pleven-born artist Svetlin Rusev donated 322 works from his personal collection to his hometown, including paintings and sculptures. Another major art venue is the Iliya Beshkov Gallery, which houses more than 1,200 works. It is a centre for established art forums, including the Pleven National Biennial of Small-Scale Fine Arts, the international Fodar Photography Biennial, the Allianz Bulgaria national competition, “Night at the Gallery” and the international Kaylaka Plein Air. The gallery also hosts art salons, chamber concerts, recitals, conferences and symposia.
The Wine Museum also offers a special reason to visit: the tasting consists of a short sommelier course led by a qualified instructor.
Archaeology and Memorial Sites
At the Storgozia fortress, the fortification system, an Early Christian basilica and a horreum have been preserved and restored. The basilica dates from the 4th century and measures 45.20 metres long and 22.20 metres wide. Pottery, weapons and coins from Storgozia and its necropolis indicate that the fortified settlement existed until the end of the 6th century.
At the “Pleven Epopee 1877” Panorama, tourists can climb onto the roof, where there are two viewing platforms. Skobelev Park Museum brings together several memorial sites: it includes a fraternal mound with an ossuary. The remains of Russian soldiers from General M. D. Skobelev’s unit are housed in a marble sarcophagus. The museum also includes the restored Turkish redoubt “Issa aga”, as well as nine fraternal mounds and monuments commemorating the fallen heroes.
Walks and Getting Around
Kaylaka Park is close to the city of Pleven and offers opportunities for walks along attractive avenues. Another option for hiking enthusiasts is the Chernelka Eco Trail, which can be accessed from both the village of Gortalovo and the village of Kartozhabene. These options differ in their setting: Kaylaka Park centres on its avenues, while the eco trail has access points through two villages.
Guests and customers of Central Mall Pleven have access to the main public transport stops. These connect the city’s neighbourhoods, the bus station and the railway station with the city centre. As routes and stops can change, check current services when planning your specific journey.
When choosing Pleven as a travel destination, you can give different weight to culture, history and walks. The museums and galleries, archaeological remains and memorial sites, and the two options for walks and hikes each offer a distinct focus.
