Strelcha: Mineral Baths, Rock Formations and Thracian History
Accommodation in Strelcha
Strelcha combines protected rock formations with a Thracian cult complex, a museum and mineral baths. When planning a trip, you can focus on nature, archaeology or bathing as distinct experiences.
Protected Rock Formations and Trekking
The rock formations of Strelcha are protected under Bulgaria’s Nature Conservation Act. The town is also a starting point for trekking routes in the SĹshtinska Sredna Gora. This gives Strelcha two distinct connections with nature to consider when planning a trip: protected rock formations and trekking as a way to explore the landscape along trails. If you’re interested in both, you can plan your days around these different activities.
Thracian History and Museum
The Thracian cult complex Heroon “Zhaba Mogila” is located in the municipality of Strelcha. It consists of a tomb-mausoleum and a sanctuary-temple. The tomb-mausoleum was excavated in 1976 and dates from the 5th–4th century BCE. The two structures belong to the same complex: Zhaba Mogila therefore refers not only to the tomb, but also includes the sanctuary.
The Strelcha Historical Museum is in the town centre. Its exhibits are divided into archaeology, Bulgarian lands in the 15th–19th centuries, and art. The period covered by the archaeology section extends from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The museum thus covers both early periods and later chapters of Bulgarian history. The Nedelya House has an exhibition hall for various events and the museum’s temporary exhibitions.
Mineral Baths in the Central Park
Strelcha Mineral Baths are located in the central park. Facilities include a 36 m² indoor pool and an area with 14 baths. The water is described as weakly mineralised, sulfate-hydrogencarbonate-sodium and fluoride-bearing. Its stated mineral content is 324 mg/l, and its temperature is +56°C.
A seasonal operating notice dated 11 June 2026 states that all pools and showers are supplied with 100% mineral water at 31–33°C. This temperature for the pools and showers should be distinguished from the +56°C stated in the water description. As the notice concerns seasonal operating conditions, check the current information about the baths before your trip.
Planning a Visit to Zhaba Mogila
The tomb-mausoleum is 4 km from the town centre. Access is via a paved road, followed by 300 m of unpaved track. Because of its proximity to a railway line, this section cannot be travelled by motor vehicle; there is no public transport. Paid guided visits to the tomb-mausoleum are listed as available on request through the Strelcha Historical Museum. Coordinate arrangements with the museum before your visit, and take the unpaved section into account when planning.
Rose Festival and Tourism Themes
A municipal post dated 1 June 2026 describes the Strelcha Festival of Tourism and Essential Oil Cultures as the successor to the Rose Festival. For the preceding five years, the post mentions a traditional Avenue of Scents and an Avenue of Crafts in Druzhba Square. The Saturday programme it describes includes the traditional rose-harvesting ritual and a visit to a rose distillery. The post also describes a local tourism fair, offered to visitors since the first festival, which showcases balneological tourism and attractive excursion destinations.
