Vetren lies at the exit of the Trajan's Gate–Palanka Pass and on both sides of the Selko Gorge. Emporion Pistiros is located in the area of Vetren, on the left bank of the Maritsa, within the Upper Thracian Plain. Archaeological sites, local customs and the region’s connection with wine give your trip a range of thematic focuses.

Emporion Pistiros and Bona Mansio

Emporion Pistiros is dated from the beginning of the first half of the 5th century BC to the beginning of the 2nd century BC. Excavations have uncovered part of the eastern fortification wall, including a gate, bastion and tower. This makes it possible to place the site both in its historical period and in terms of specific structural features.

Bona Mansio offers a different archaeological focus. The site lies on flat terrain in the area of Vetren, immediately north of the road between Vetren and Boshulya. The remains consist of a low mound enclosed by a fortification wall that is mostly buried. The structures documented today are understood to be a Late Antique fortified settlement or a castellum that took over the function of the station; the identification with Bona Mansio is an archaeological interpretation. By comparison, the focus at Pistiros is on the partially uncovered structural remains of a fortification, while at Bona Mansio it is on the mound and the largely buried wall.

The Thracian tomb near Vetren dates to the 4th century BC and is located immediately beside Emporion Pistiros. On May 15, 2024, a visit was described as possible by prior arrangement with the archaeological museum or by telephone. Confirm the arrangements again before you travel. The tomb’s date falls within the period of Emporion Pistiros.

Local History, Customs and Wine

The local Dervishovden is associated with traditional rituals. These include masked performances, the Kvas ritual and wedding customs. A 2025 entry by the National Culture Fund describes a project to revive Dervishovden. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact event dates in advance.

Lamartine visited Vetren in 1832. The community center in Vetren preserves an urn containing soil from his grave. Wineries from Vetren are also included in a proposed wine route intended to promote Vetrensko wine. This makes wine another regional theme alongside the archaeological sites and local customs.

Regional Context: Septemvri

Septemvri provides access to the Septemvri–Dobrinishte Rhodope narrow-gauge railway. The historic line crosses mountain landscapes; its stations and stops provide access to natural and historical sights. This distinct regional connection complements Vetren’s archaeological and cultural themes without replacing them.
