Rosen: River Landscape, Festive Traditions and History
Accommodation in Rosen
Rosen between River and Hills
Rosen lies on the left bank of the Luda Yana and on the southern slopes of the Ovchi Hills. The riverbank and surrounding hills are the defining geographical features that help you locate the village.
Culture and Traditions
The Angel Velichkov-1902 Community Center was founded in 1902 and is a historic landmark in the village. In 2019, the community center organized reenactments of folk customs, including Babin Den, St. George’s Day and Enyovden. Palm Sunday was Rosen’s biggest celebration in 2019 and 2020; the community center and mayor’s office organized it together. A major celebration and reenactments of individual customs offer different insights into local culture.
Rosna Kitka operates through the local community center; the group also includes the Rosenche children’s singing and dancing ensemble. Group activities may change. If you are interested, check in advance for current performances. At a festival of authentic songs, Rosna Kitka returned in 2019 with nine gold and three silver medals. A dance ensemble was founded in Rosen in 2009.
Rosen is also associated with a memorial bust dedicated to Pencho Angelov Garev (Daskala) for the Second World War, as well as a memorial plaque for Aleksandar G. Petkov.
Archaeological Traces and Local Traditions
There are seven Thracian burial mounds in the area of Rosen. About 2.5 km northwest of Rosen, in the Tsar Asen area, two burial mounds are associated with the late Roman or early Byzantine fortified settlement of Hisarya. The settlement was located near a bend in the Luda Yana. Pottery fragments from an older settlement have been recorded about one kilometre northwest of Rosen. The evidence therefore relates to different sites and finds in the surrounding area, not to a single findspot.
A local tradition is also associated with an area northwest of Rosen: during Rosalia, sick people would lie in the dew in search of a cure. This is part of the village’s folklore and should be understood as a traditional story.
Fishing Waters and Access
A fishing spot lies about 1.8 km northeast of Rosen, on the bank of the Luda Yana. It can be reached via a 1.6 km unpaved road that branches off from the paved section of the Rosen–Road 8003 route. The roughly 1.8 km describes the fishing spot’s location northeast of the village; the 1.6 km refers instead to the access road.
Fishing opportunities are available at the site. Before travelling, check whether fishing activities and access are suitable for your visit. As road conditions can change, it is also advisable to check them before setting out. This lets you consider the location of the fishing spot and the access conditions separately when planning your trip.
