Varshets: Mineral Water, Parkland and Bathing History
Accommodation in Varshets
Varshets lies at the foot of the Western Stara Planina. Mineral water, bathing history and parks give the town a range of different facets. For your trip planning, you can consider balneological themes, historic buildings, walking trails for sport and a recreation area southwest of the town separately.
Mineral Water and Historic Baths
The mineral water in Varshets is hyperthermal. Its temperature is 38 °C, its pH is 8.4 and its total mineralization is 0.19 g/l. These figures describe different properties of the water and give you a concrete point of reference if you are interested in local balneology. If you are considering a treatment, assess independently whether it is suitable for your needs.
The history of the baths can be traced through two buildings with different dates. The Old Mineral Bath opened in 1910 as Bulgaria’s first mineral bath and was built in the style of the baths of Baden-Baden. The Bath Casino was built in 1922 and is known as the Royal Casino. Today, the building can only be viewed from the outside. The building’s historical significance and the opportunity to visit it today are therefore distinct: a visit to the Royal Casino is limited to viewing its exterior.
Museum and Design History
The History Museum – Varshets comprises four departments: antiquity, archaeological finds and coins, balneology, and ethnography. Its themes thus range from the town’s history and its finds to bathing traditions and ethnographic perspectives. Guided discussions at the museum are held exclusively in Bulgarian; bear this in mind if you plan to include one in your itinerary.
The design of Sunny Garden is also easy to appreciate: the park was laid out in 1934 and features stone avenues arranged in a radial pattern, using stone that reflects sunlight. The motif connects the layout of the paths with the distinctive material. For visitors interested in landscape and garden design, this offers a different way to explore the town’s history than the bathhouses or the museum’s themes.
Park Trails and Outdoor Excursions
Varshets Town Park stretches from the town centre to the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. Its well-maintained paths add up to more than 7 km and are used for sports and health-related activities. The location between the centre and the foot of the mountains describes the park’s extent; the total length of the paths also gives a concrete sense of scale for outdoor activities.
Varshets also has an artificial park covering 800 decares, considered the second-largest artificial park in Bulgaria. For a different focus, consider Zeleni del: the area lies 10 km southwest of Varshets and is a starting point for the ascent of Todorini Kukli. It is also suitable for picnics, excursions and camping. The park trails for sports and health-related activities are thus complemented by a named recreation area and opportunities for a range of outdoor pursuits.
