The Stob Pyramids give Kocherinovo a distinctive landscape feature: the formations are designated as a natural landmark in the area of Stob, within the municipality of Kocherinovo. They are 30 to 40 metres thick; they are usually 6 to 10 metres high, reaching 12 metres in places. Their shapes include pointed, needle-like, pyramidal and conical forms. Some are topped with stone slabs that resemble oversized mushrooms.

From the summit, the view stretches across the Rila Valley, the river, the approaches to the Rila Monastery and snow-capped mountain peaks. You can view the pyramids from a developed eco-trail or a maintained cart track. The cart track follows a small stream at the foot of the formations. This offers a range of landscape impressions: the distinctive rock formations themselves, the stream along the path and the view from above.

From Kocherinovo, follow the main road towards the Rila Monastery and turn right for Stob. From the entrance to the eco-trail, walk about one kilometre. The tourist information centre in Stob offers guided tours and free brochures in Bulgarian, English, German and Chinese.

History and Culture in the Municipality

The history of the area can also be traced through specific buildings and archaeological sites. The Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa in Kocherinovo dates from 1863. The Church of Sv. Prokopiy in Stob was built in 1860. Twelve Thracian burial mounds have been identified in the municipality; excavations took place around Kocherinovo and Dragodan.

In Porominovo, the surviving Roman archaeological site includes an inscription to the god Sabazios and the foundations of stone columns. In the Gradishte area near Kocherinovo are the remains of the medieval fortified settlement of Krashevo, considered contemporary with Stobi. A city called Stobi, dating from the 9th century, is also associated with the Stob area.

Another historical trace is the former Rila narrow-gauge railway. It was 40 kilometres long, built in 1920 for the Balabanov factory, later also carried passengers and was closed in 1960. The different periods—from the Thracian burial mounds to Roman and medieval sites and the railway—give the municipality several historical points of interest.
