Discover Boboshevo
Accommodation in Boboshevo
Boboshevo brings together historic churches and a museum collection with archaeological traces and trails leading to a spring, a cave, and viewpoints towards the Struma. When planning your trip, you can consider two questions: Which landmarks tell the story of the town, and which destinations shape the route out into the landscape? The answers range from distinctive church architecture to an eco-trail with views of the Struma.
Plan your stay and journey
Yana Hut can be reached from Boboshevo via a 4 km paved road. The hut has 64 beds, a dining room, a kitchen, and parking. As capacity and facilities may change, check these details before booking or setting off. You should also confirm access conditions before travelling.
Museum and churches in Boboshevo
The permanent collection of the Nikifor Bibin House Museum is on display in central Boboshevo. The museum collection also includes objects from the Chardako settlement, including bone, stone, and ceramic items. If you are planning a visit, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
The Church of the Holy Mother of God, dating from the Bulgarian National Revival, is distinguished by its unusual architecture, with ten columns and eighteen domes. It is an active church and a cultural monument. The late medieval Church of St. Athanasius is in the upper part of Boboshevo near the cemetery; its origins are dated to 1590 or 1600.
The Church of St. Elijah preserves extensive murals, with an older layer from the 17th century and a later one from 1898. The date of the Church of St. Dimitur is also notable: it is one of the few surviving examples from the 15th century. The medieval Church of St. Theodore is dated to the 10th–12th centuries. Two layers are distinguished in its murals; the earlier fresco layer is destroyed. The building dates and later painted layers therefore reflect different historical periods.
Two chapels add to the area's church heritage. The Chapel of St. George stands outside Boboshevo on the road to Dragodan, on the site of an older church. The Chapel of the Archangel Michael is on the ridge on the southern slope of Ruen and was built after the Liberation on the site of an earlier church.
Archaeological traces and a fortress
The town's history goes back further than its surviving churches. An ancient settlement stood in the Mardishte locality, its area extending into Boboshevo and north of the town. West of Boboshevo, on Dragoyna Hill, the medieval Gradishteto Fortress preserves wall remains. It dates from the Second Bulgarian Empire. The settlement traces and the fortress represent different periods in the region's history.
Trails, a cave, and the landscape
The eco-trail passes the Ayazmoto spring and the Cave of St. John of Rila. Along the way, there are views towards the Struma and the surrounding mountains. Trail conditions and access may vary seasonally; check in advance. The meadows of Boboshevo are also globally important for the conservation of the corncrake.
The Ruen Monastery of St. John of Rila lies near Boboshevo. A scenic trail connects the monastery with the cave associated with the saint's early work. In addition to churches and historical traces, trails and connections to the landscape are distinct themes to explore during your stay.
The wider setting: Boboshevo Municipality
Beyond the town itself, Boboshevo Municipality includes part of the Rila Mountains, the northern slopes of the Ruen Mountains, and a section of the tectonic Struma Valley. This wider geographical setting adds a variety of landscapes to the town's history; it should be distinguished from the attractions within the town.
