A trip to Vladimirovo brings together several interests: Glavantsi culture and family history, the more recent history of the Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Michael, and the protected landscape of the Dobrudzha. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the occasion: a festival offers a different focus from the church’s architectural history or the landscape of the Sukhaya Reka protected area.

The Sukhaya Reka Landscape

The land around Vladimirovo lies within the Sukhaya Reka protected area in the Dobrudzha. The landscape includes river valleys, dry gorges, rocks, and rock ledges. Fourteen habitat types and several animal and plant species are protected in the area. Protected species include the European otter and the European ground squirrel. If nature and landscape conservation are important to your trip, check the boundaries of the protected area and the applicable visitor regulations before your visit.

Glavantsi Culture and Village Tradition

The Glavantsi Festival aims to preserve, present, and promote Glavantsi cultural heritage as part of Bulgaria’s intangible cultural heritage. It is also a gathering of families and relatives who were separated for decades. In Vladimirovo, descendants of migrants who now live in Dobrudzha, Silistra, Bessarabia, and Ukraine come together. The festival thus brings cultural traditions and family reunions together.

On the first day, the program includes a reenactment of the Glavantsi migration to Dobrudzha. Glavantsi performers present authentic clothing and dances associated with descendants of migrants from Glavan. The reenactment, clothing, and dances each highlight different aspects of the cultural tradition.

Traditional Glavantsi dishes were prepared and presented to guests at the village festival in Vladimirovo. The first Saturday in June is the recurring date; check the date for the relevant year before traveling. As future programs may vary, it is worth checking the specific dates and performances if you are planning your trip around the festival.

Church History Across Two Eras

Construction of the Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Michael began in 2001, when Metropolitan Kiril laid the foundation stone. The church was consecrated on December 14, 2025. These dates mark different stages in its recent construction history: the start of construction and the consecration. A relic fragment of an unknown martyr is sewn into the church’s antimension.

An earlier church with the same dedication was damaged in the 1939 earthquake, later abandoned, and eventually demolished. The damage and demolition concern the earlier building; the dates 2001 and 2025 belong to the history of the more recent church.
