For your trip to Dobrich, architecture, art, literature, traditional crafts and nature can each provide a different focus. The local selection ranges from historic houses and collections to an open-air museum, a military cemetery and a city park with a history of its own. The topics that interest you most can shape the focus of your stay.

Architecture, Everyday Life and Crafts

Built in 1860, the Ethnographic House is one of the best-preserved architectural monuments from the Bulgarian National Revival period. Its ethnographic exhibition features clothing, textiles and household items. These objects reveal Bulgarian culture and the regional character of Dobrudzha. The house thus combines architectural history with insights into material culture and regional identity.

The Old Dobrich Architectural and Ethnographic Open-Air Museum offers a different focus. It showcases and preserves traditional crafts from Dobrudzha dating from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The Old Dobrich Training Museum offers educational programs for schoolchildren, young people, university students, and Bulgarian and foreign tourists. Crafts and educational outreach are therefore distinct themes of the complex: it focuses both on regional traditions and on learning opportunities for different visitor groups.

Old Dobrich is also home to an inn, a restaurant, a tavern and a café serving traditional Bulgarian dishes. If you would like to eat there, check in advance which options are available during your visit.

Art and Literature

The Dobrich Art Gallery is housed in a neoclassical cultural monument protected as a historic landmark. Its permanent collections of paintings, sculptures and prints are displayed across nine halls. It also has a paper art collection considered unique in Bulgaria. Traditional visual arts and paper art provide two distinct highlights of the gallery.

The Yordan Yovkov Memorial House is dedicated to the writer’s life and work. It houses Bulgaria’s only permanent museum exhibition about Yordan Yovkov, as well as the largest collection about him. The building itself has also received an architectural award: the Archskar. Here, literary history meets a distinct architectural dimension.

Military History and Remembrance

The Military Cemetery Museum complex is classified as an immovable cultural asset of national significance. The military cemetery was established in 1916 during the Battle of Dobrich. It contains around 3,500 burials representing six national armies, ten nationalities and six faiths. The historical context and the different national and religious connections give the site a layered significance: alongside the year of the battle, the diversity of the groups represented there also comes into view.

Park and Nature

St. George City Park was established in 1860 and designated a monument of park art. It was therefore created in the same year as the Ethnographic House, while the two sites represent different aspects of cultural heritage: park art at one, and architecture from the Bulgarian National Revival period at the other. Comparing their dates thus leads to two distinct areas of interest.

The exhibition “The Nature of Dobrudzha” uses panoramic scenes to showcase the region’s characteristic flora, fauna and biodiversity. Another focus on nature and animal welfare is the Dobrich Centre for Nature and Animal Protection, Bulgaria’s first licensed zoo. Dobrich therefore offers different ways to explore nature and the landscape: from the region’s biodiversity in an exhibition to an institution focused on nature and animal protection.
