Zaldapa lies between Abrit and Dobrin, in the Kaleto area. The fortified ancient site occupies a peninsula 1,200 meters long and up to 500 meters wide. These dimensions give an impression of how far the center extends across the terrain. Zaldapa is considered the largest fortified ancient center in what is now Dobruja, combining a striking landscape with evidence of Roman and early Christian history.

Landscape and Layout of the Fortress

A deep valley borders the peninsula to the east, north, and northwest; a side ravine forms its boundary to the southwest and west. Only the southern part was fortified. This distinction is important for understanding the layout: the northern peninsula and the valleys immediately east and west of the fortified area are thought to have contained the residential quarters. The fortress had 32 towers and five gates.

The excavated remains also show that this was more than a single defensive structure. They include an urban basilica, an early Christian church, and a large water reservoir. Zaldapa held a central position in the Roman defense system established in Dobruja after 272. The site can therefore be understood both through its ground plan and its role in the wider historical context.

Basilica No. 2 and Early Christian Architecture

Basilica No. 2 had three naves and a three-sided apse, a narthex, and a three-part atrium. Its central nave had a marble floor; the walls were decorated with mosaics on a gold background. More than 3,000 mosaic tesserae were uncovered during the excavations. There were also richly decorated marble chancel screens. These details bring the architecture to life: the ground plan, flooring, and wall decoration belong together here, rather than describing the basilica solely in terms of its size.

Another distinctive architectural feature was located in the apse: a synthronon with an ambulatory. No such feature has been recorded for the other approximately 60 early Christian churches in Scythia. This comparison helps place the distinctive design within the region’s church architecture without equating it with Zaldapa’s other excavated buildings.

Archaeological Finds in the Surrounding Area

In the necropolis closer to Abrit, ancient burials containing ceramic vessels, coins, and various metal objects were uncovered during construction of the reservoir. The finds there also included a shaft grave with rich grave goods dating to the second half of the 4th century. Burials following Christian rites were also identified. These findings add different burial practices and finds from various historical contexts to our understanding of the region around Abrit.
