Primorsko: Discover nature, coast and culture
Accommodation in Primorsko
Museum and exhibition content in Primorsko, Kiten, Yasna Polyana and Novo Panicharevo covers different themes. This makes it possible to distinguish the coastal landscape and nature from archaeology, ethnography and regional history.
Coast and location
The town of Primorsko lies on a small peninsula between Stamopolu Bay and Devil’s Bay. Across the municipality as a whole, the beaches cover a total area of 1,045,000 m². Of this, 523,000 m² consists of protected dunes and beaches. The peninsula location describes the town, while the area figures refer to the municipality.
Nature around Primorsko
In the area around Primorsko, the Ropotamo Reserve includes the mouth of the Ropotamo River, the Arkutino marsh, rare longos forests and various coastal rock formations. Arkutino, also called Bear Marsh, is a marsh and reserve in Primorsko Municipality. It is known for its unspoiled nature and rare plants such as the sea daffodil.
Organized tourist boat trips on the Ropotamo River are permitted in the reserve. Check local operating conditions before planning such a trip. Municipal signs point to eco-trails leading to Begliktash, the “Lavskata glava” rock formation and the Ropotamo River. Check the condition of the signs on site. The “Lavskata glava” rock formation was declared a natural landmark in 1947.
Archaeology and history in Primorsko and Kiten
Begliktash lies five kilometres north of Primorsko, at the foot of the Strandzha Mountains. The site is considered a Thracian megalithic sanctuary and ancient observatory. At the Historical Museum of Primorsko, the ethnographic collection presents the lives of Black Sea Strandzha residents in the past century through folk costumes, household items and vessels.
The museum also displays archaeological finds discovered during excavations in the area and in the waters of Primorsko Municipality. These include a tombstone from the Chenger area, the Thracian sanctuary of Begliktash, dolmens and the Urdoviza fortress wall in Kiten. Urdoviza was an important Bulgarian fortress and a key naval base. The restored fortress walls stand where Kiten is now located.
The permanent exhibition “Secrets from the Sea Floor” is located in the centre of Kiten. It features finds from a submerged prehistoric settlement, a sunken ship and anchors, as well as artefacts from archaeological investigations of the Urdoviza fortress wall. A guided tour in Bulgarian is planned for the summer season; check current operating details before your visit.
Exhibitions in Yasna Polyana and Novo Panicharevo
The “Balgarskata Yasna polyana” museum exhibition was created with the support of Primorsko Municipality and the mayor’s office of Yasna Polyana and opened in 1998. Its subject matter includes Tolstoy’s Russian estate and a Tolstoyan colony that existed in Alan Kayryak from 1906 to 1908. This gives the exhibition a different focus from the archaeological collections in Primorsko and Kiten: it explores a historical connection to the Tolstoyan movement.
The “Sv. Troitsa” church in Novo Panicharevo was built in 1881 and contains exceptionally rare icons. A museum opened there in 2014 in Strati Dimitrov’s authentic house in a central location. The church and museum complement the archaeological themes with local religious and museum history.
Plan your visit
Primorsko’s Tourist Information Centre provides visitors with information about attractions in the town and region, rehabilitation centres, various activities and current events. If you would like to contact the centre, check the contact details again before your trip.
Undated visitor information for the Historical Museum of Primorsko states that it is accessible year-round, offers guided tours in Bulgarian, Russian and English, and is accessible to people with disabilities. Confirm these visitor details in advance. This will help you plan around the different themes: the ethnographic and archaeological collection in Primorsko, the finds featured in Kiten, or the exhibitions in Yasna Polyana and Novo Panicharevo.
