Gyulyovtsa: Landscape, History and Wine
Accommodation in Gyulyovtsa
Gyulyovtsa lies in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. A wooded hill with traces of a fortress, a memorial plaque in the center and a wine tradition give the place several distinct features.
Landscape, Water and Natural Sites
The Dyulenski Pass begins above the village. North of Gyulyovtsa is the wooded hill of Kaleto, where traces of a fortress have been preserved. The pass connects the area with its elevation, while Kaleto adds its own landscape and historical dimension through its forest and traces of a fortress. This makes the hill a clear landmark for visitors interested in nature and history.
The Poroy Reservoir is nearby and extends into the territory of Gyulyovtsa. It is used for irrigation and fishing. Unlike the hill and the pass, the reservoir connects the landscape with the use of water; irrigation and fishing represent different functions.
Siniyat Vir is a small waterfall on the Byala River, a few kilometers from Gyulyovtsa. An eco-trail to the waterfall was created with support from Nessebar Municipality. If you plan to visit the waterfall, check the condition of the path in advance.
For planning purposes, the two water-related sites can be distinguished: the Poroy Reservoir is nearby and extends into Gyulyovtsa’s territory; Siniyat Vir is a few kilometers away on the Byala River. The reservoir is used for irrigation and fishing, while the eco-trail provides a practical point of reference for visiting the waterfall.
History and Remembrance
Ancient fortified settlements and defensive structures in the area of Gyulyovtsa formed part of the defense system along the Anchialo–Marcianopolis road. The village school opened in 1870. A memorial plaque in the village center commemorates people from Gyulyovtsa who died in the Second World War. The community center was founded in 1927 and still exists today. The school’s opening in 1870 and the community center’s founding in 1927 mark two points in the history of education and culture; the memorial plaque adds a distinct focus on remembrance. Exactly 57 years separate the school’s opening in 1870 from the founding of the community center in 1927.
Wine, Festival and Rose Oil
Gyulyovtsa is associated with homemade wines produced using traditional methods. The Young Wine Festival is held annually on February 14. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates locally before departure. The area’s agricultural history also took another direction: in the 17th century, the valley around the settlement was planted with oil-bearing roses, and rose oil production began there. Rose cultivation adds a distinct agricultural tradition, firmly rooted in time, to the area’s association with wine.
