Gotse Delchev: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Gotse Delchev
Gotse Delchev offers several starting points for planning your trip: the Municipal Historical Museum, ancient remains, buildings, nature and activities in the municipality. The following location details help distinguish these highlights.
The Municipal Historical Museum
The Municipal Historical Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1877 in the Bulgarian Baroque style. The building is therefore itself part of the museum’s historical profile. The building includes twelve exhibition halls, a lapidarium and an inner courtyard.
The archaeological exhibition includes a Thracian chariot and fragments from Nikopolis ad Nestum, a Roman city dating to the second century. Annual exhibitions also present archaeological finds associated with the Thracian, Slavic and Proto-Bulgarian cultures of the Mesta Valley. Thus, individual finds in the museum sit alongside the history of an ancient site whose remains lie outside the city.
Ancient Remains and Architectural History
The remains of Nikopolis ad Nestum lie seven kilometres east of Gotse Delchev. The city is one of the few preserved ancient cities in Bulgaria and the only one in the Rhodope Mountains from the period of Roman rule in the Balkans. The fragments in the museum and the remains of Nikopolis ad Nestum are two distinct points of reference to the Roman past.
Buildings from other eras are also among the town’s cultural highlights. The Old Mosque in Gotse Delchev is an architectural and archaeological cultural monument. The House of Rifat Bey is one of the preserved architectural ensembles from the Bulgarian National Revival. In the village of Delchevo, 25 houses are classified as cultural monuments.
Traditional Bulgarian costumes from the Gotse Delchev area, considered diverse in form and colour, are also part of the regional culture. The Nevrocope Ensemble for folk songs and dances is Bulgaria’s first amateur folk ensemble.
Nature in the Municipality
Part of the municipality lies within Pirin National Park, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Orelyak Nature Reserve lies entirely within the municipality and protects a remarkable beech forest that is more than 150 years old. The Mesta Gorge and the Orelyak Nature Reserve are also within the municipality.
Routes and Stays in Popovi Livadi
Popovi Livadi lies on the international E-4 mountain route; a marked trail leads from there towards Orelak. The area has rest stops, hotels, villas, bungalows and dining establishments. As individual businesses may change, it is advisable to check the availability of any services you want before travelling.
A description published in 2016 mentions a mountain-bike enduro/all-mountain route that starts in Popovi Livadi and ends in Delchevo. Trail conditions and rideability may change. Therefore, check the latest conditions before setting out; the route description does not specify a difficulty rating.
Dining and Winegrowing
There are activities and a specialised fish restaurant at a fishpond on the Mesta River. The Mesta Valley is considered suitable for winegrowing. Uva Nestum, a winery and boutique restaurant-enoteca, is 1.5 kilometres from Gotse Delchev on the road towards Leshten and Kovachevitsa. As the business and its offerings may change, check the latest information before visiting.
