Oostvleteren: Cultural History and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Oostvleteren
When looking for a hotel in Oostvleteren, you can first consider whether you are more interested in architectural and local history or in trails through a nature reserve landscape. Sint-Amatuskerk, Meestermolen and Noordhof represent different historical themes; the history of De Struise Brouwers brewery adds another perspective on a building’s former use. The Molenroute and Brabanthoek walking route then lead to two other questions: Where is a specific rest stop, and which route runs through the surroundings of a nature reserve?
Church and Mill History
Sint-Amatuskerk was a late Gothic hall church dating from the 15th century and is built on the site of a Romanesque church. It was completely destroyed by a fire in December 1977. This allows three periods to be distinguished: its Romanesque origins, its late Gothic building phase and the clearly dated loss of the building. The term “hall church” identifies its architectural form, while “late Gothic” adds a chronological and stylistic classification. The history of the building is therefore shaped not only by its medieval origins; its destruction in the 20th century is also part of its historical course.
Meestermolen offers a different historical focus. It is a protected monument and a standard windmill with an open mill base. Its protected status and architectural classification answer different questions: one indicates its protection, the other its design. Its history is also tied to its location. Until 1973, the mill stood in Gijverinkhove; it was then moved to Oostvleteren. Its chronology therefore differs significantly from that of Sint-Amatuskerk: the defining turning point for the mill was its relocation, while for the church it was its complete destruction by fire.
Former Uses and Routes
At Noordhof, the focus is not on its architectural form but on its former function: historically, it served as the seat of the lordship of Ten Broucke. At De Struise Brouwers, by contrast, the building’s transformation is what connects it to the past. The brewery is housed in a restored former school building known as “Het Oud Schooltje.” The school and brewery thus represent two successive uses of the same building; its name recalls its former history as a school.
There is a picnic bench at De Meestersmolen on the Molenroute, shortly before KP 35. The kilometer marker helps you locate the rest stop along the route. If you want to make a definite plan to stop at the bench, check in advance whether it is still there, as its availability may change. The Brabanthoek walking route runs through the surroundings of the Brabanthoek nature reserve. Unlike the precise information about the bench, this describes the route’s landscape context. The information about the two routes thus provides different kinds of guidance: one includes a specific rest stop, while the other highlights its connection to a nature reserve.
