Vlamertinge: Hop Heritage, Remembrance and Landscape
Accommodation in Vlamertinge
When looking for a hotel in Vlamertinge, your interests can help guide your travel plans: local attractions range from memorial sites and historic architecture to a park landscape and a cycle path for everyday use.
Memorial Sites and Village History
Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery contains 1,813 Commonwealth graves from the First World War. It was established in June 1917 and remained in use until October 1918. The cemetery is laid out on two levels and includes a Cross of Sacrifice, a Stone of Remembrance and a classical pavilion. Its dates and named architectural features give the cemetery a clearly defined historical and architectural significance.
Sint-Vedastuskerk (St Vedastus Church) defines the village centre as a neo-Gothic church with an older west tower. After its destruction, reconstruction began in October 1920. Another local landmark in time is Calvarieberg: it was solemnly consecrated at the corner of Hospitaalstraat and Poperingestraat on New Year's Day in the Holy Year 1900. These dates point to different periods in the area's history, from 1900 through the First World War to the church's reconstruction.
Hopmagazijn: From Hop Warehouse to Field Hospital
Hopmagazijn in Vlamertinge is a protected monument. Dating from 1869, the hop warehouse is of industrial archaeological value and retains much of its original equipment. Its former use during the First World War is also part of the building's history: at that time, it served as a field hospital. The hop industry and wartime use represent different chapters in the history of the same place.
The surviving equipment includes a cast-iron hand press (Ch. Nolet, Gand), a wooden press for pressing hop samples, a wooden hand press in attics 1 and 2, four kilns and a cast-iron hoist. The hop-sample press and the kilns illustrate the building's former use as a hop warehouse; the complete inventory also includes other presses and hoisting equipment. Its historical context is therefore shaped not only by the year it was built, but also by the technical equipment that has been preserved.
Park Landscape and Surroundings
The park of Kasteel van Vlamertinge (Vlamertinge Castle) stretches north of the village centre along Hospitaalstraat and Kasteelweg towards Elverdinge. The Grote Kemmelbeek forms its western boundary. Open lawns and large hay meadows offer views of farms in the immediate and wider surroundings. Unlike the individual memorials and church buildings, this landscape is defined by open spaces and views of the surrounding farmland.
Cycle Path and Regional Walking Route
The 2.59-kilometre cycle path along Vlamertingestraat is part of the regional functional cycle network for everyday journeys to school or work. It provides a direct and safe connection between Elverdinge and Vlamertinge. Its length and purpose offer a clear indication of its role: this is a route for everyday journeys, not a description of a tourist circular route.
The Galgebossen walking route, by contrast, explores the wider region around Vlamertinge. It takes you through the Galgebossen, which lie on the boundary between Elverdinge, Vlamertinge and Poperinge. For planning purposes, it is useful to distinguish between these two options: the cycle path along Vlamertingestraat for everyday journeys, and the walking route through the Galgebossen.
