Tiegem combines a protected landscape with religious history and architecture. The cultural and historical landscape area includes Sint-Arnoldus Park and the Tiegemberg, as well as the Sint-Arnoldus Chapel, the Bergmolen and several villas associated with artists. These themes give the destination a clear identity: it can be characterised both by its hilly landscape and by its buildings and their historical context. If you take both cultural history and landscape into account when choosing a destination, Tiegem offers a range of ways to explore them.

A landscape with far-reaching views

The Tiegemberg is a high hilltop on the Scheldt–Leie watershed. From there, you can enjoy an exceptional view that helps you get your bearings across the wider area, especially over the Leie Valley; prominent woodland and recognisable church towers shape the view. The hill thus provides a landmark in the landscape, while the protected cultural and historical landscape area also encompasses Sint-Arnoldus Park. This gives you two perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the wide view across the valley and surrounding area, and the cultural history embodied in individual buildings and places.

The Sint-Arnoldus Chapel and religious history

The Sint-Arnoldus Chapel stands at the Hofdries, regarded as the place where Tiegem originated. The chapel has been a protected monument since 31 January 2018. It was built between 1864 and 1866 by Kortrijk architect Pierre Croquison. The older veneration of Saint Arnoldus in Tiegem is a separate matter: it began in 1457, when Guillielmus, Bishop of Serepthia and Abbot of Sint-Pieters Abbey in Oudenburg, gave Tiegem church a relic. The chapel’s construction and the beginning of the veneration therefore belong to different historical periods.

The Sint-Arnoldus novena is held in the chapel each year from 15 to 23 August. If you would like to connect your trip with this religious tradition, you can take these set dates into account when planning. The Bergmolen, also known as the Stampersmolen, is also a protected monument; this protection has been in place since 23 June 1960. The two names refer to the same mill and help place it within local cultural history.

Trails and time outdoors

The Streuvels walking route explores the gently rolling countryside around the Tiegemberg, where Streuvels often spent time. It follows unpaved country lanes and brick-paved paths to the Tiegemberg. This brings the focus not only to individual buildings, but also to the landscape and Streuvels’ connection to it. The information about the terrain and path surfaces gives you practical guidance if you are considering the route as part of your stay.

Sint-Arnoldus Park offers a place to relax for walkers and nature lovers, as well as a playground for children. Advance reservation is required for a picnic in the park. This is important to bear in mind when planning to combine time outdoors with a meal.

Villas and connections to artists

Villa Zonnekracht is a Cubist house made up of interlocking geometric brick volumes, with one or two storeys. It was the country residence and studio of Kortrijk artist Lieven Colardyn (1894–1962). The house’s architectural form and its connection to Colardyn are both notable features. Villa ’t Vossenhol was built around 1927 as the home of painter Staf Stientjes, also known as Gustaaf D’Halluin; he later ran it as a summer café.

Huis Ten Berge on the Meuleberg adds another artist’s story to this group of houses: Vital Moreels built the villa in 1908, and landscape painter Valerius De Saedeleer (1867–1941) lived there until 1914. The examples differ in their architectural form, residents and historical use. This gives you several ways to explore Tiegem’s architectural history, rather than treating the villas as alike.
