Sint-Kruis: Castles, Parks and Landscape Heritage
Accommodation in Sint-Kruis
Sint-Kruis brings together protected castle estates, historic parkland and a large open space. Two perspectives are helpful when choosing a destination: the architectural development of individual places and the different forms of the landscape. Male, Rooigem, De Vijvers and the parish church each represent distinct historical highlights; Maleveld and the Bisschopsdreef add landscape features. Practical information about bus routes and park-and-ride facilities also makes it easier to find your way around.
Kasteel van Male: Architectural Form and Development
Kasteel van Male in Sint-Kruis is a protected monument. Its medieval remains include foundations and older cellars belonging to a square complex surrounded by a moat. Its history spans a castle, a pleasure garden and an abbey. This sequence adds a historical perspective to the site's architectural features.
Rooigem: Protected Park and Garden
Kasteel Rooigem in Sint-Kruis is also a protected monument. Its park is protected as a village view, covers about three hectares and is surrounded by a moat. At Innengaard, visitors can pick a bouquet of flowers in the garden of Kasteel Rooigem. Picking flowers adds a specific garden activity to the architectural description.
De Vijvers and the Parish Church
The Kasteelsite De Vijvers comprises a park and a remnant of the Malevijver. A castle probably already stood on this site in the 16th century. Another architectural highlight is the parish church of the Holy Cross and Saint Joseph, an early example of mature Neo-Gothic architecture. The cultural range therefore extends from a possible castle history to a church building with a clearly defined architectural style.
Landscape on Different Scales in Sint-Kruis
Maleveld is a 130-hectare open area within the city of Sint-Kruis. Maleveld and the Kasteeldomein van Male are recorded in the Landscape Atlas. Compared with the approximately three-hectare park of Kasteel Rooigem, the difference in scale is clear: a large open area stands alongside a park surrounded by a moat. The Bisschopsdreef adds a linear landscape feature. It is a 750-metre-long castle avenue running from Polderstraat to Gemeneweideweg-Noord. Its length and endpoints give the avenue a clearly defined spatial outline.
Getting There by Bus and Park-and-Ride
For bus travel, the Sint-Kruis Kerk stop is a useful point of reference; it is served by routes 1, 3, 4 and 80. Drivers have two park-and-ride sites to choose from: Boogschutterslaan is by Sint-Kruis-Kerk, while the second is by the Brughia sports club next to Studio Hall. Together, the two sites have space for a total of 100 cars. Bus users can navigate by the stop and route numbers, while drivers can use the two locations and their combined capacity as a guide.
