Proven combines signposted walking trails, hop cultivation and a rich architectural and local history. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: you can compare route lengths and landscape features or focus on historic buildings and memorial sites.

Walking Trails and Landscape

The signposted Provenade starts in Proven and offers routes of 9 or 12 kilometres. The difference is specific: the longer option is three kilometres longer than the shorter one. Hop fields and small roads line the route, which continues to the forgotten forests of Proven and Krombeke.

The Provenade specifies two route lengths, while the Couthof Walk focuses on red route arrows and information boards about the history of Couthofbos. The Couthof Walk follows red arrows through the historic estate, and information boards tell the story of Couthofbos.

Another route is the Volkssportroute - Blauw. You can travel it by bicycle or car; it passes through Poperinge, Watou, Roesbrugge and Proven.

Hop Cultivation in Proven

At ’t Hoppecruyt, the Desmyter family has been growing hops in the heart of Proven since 1893. This recorded starting year gives the local hop-growing tradition a specific historical reference. Hops also feature as a landscape element along the Provenade, together with small roads and the forgotten forests. The farm and walking route thus offer two different ways to discover Proven through its landscape and agriculture.

Church, Rectory and Local History

The Sint-Victor parish church and the cemetery surrounding it in Proven are protected monuments. The cemetery preserves an architecturally significant collection of tombstones. The former church was damaged by fire in 1802; the Sint-Victorkerk was rebuilt in 1806. The choir tower is popularly known as the “Peperbus.”

The rectory of the Sint-Victor parish in Proven is also a protected monument. It is a well-preserved example of a rectory on land originally surrounded by a moat and was built in the first half of the 18th century. The rectory is notable for its construction date, the original shape of its grounds and its state of preservation; the church’s history, by contrast, is marked by fire and reconstruction.

The ’t Couthof estate was built in 1763 as a summer residence and is surrounded by a 19th-century landscaped park with a pond and grassland. The Couthof lordship was first mentioned as early as 1350. These dates distinguish the historical mention of the lordship, the construction of the summer residence and the later park as separate points of reference.

Proven was first mentioned in 1176 under the name Provenda. The village’s history also includes the memorial stone commemorating the military and civilian dead of the First and Second World Wars. Another historical trace is the former cobbled Poperinge-Dunkirk road, which Louis XIV had built for military reasons.
