Lendelede: Churches, Chapels and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Lendelede
In Lendelede, sacred architectural history and several walking routes are distinct themes. At Sint-Blasius Church, you can trace its development from its Romanesque origins to its Gothic expansion. Berg Chapel and Vermandels Chapel each have their own dedication and building history; Berg Chapel also offers views of two valleys. There are also different options for walks: an activity route with tasks along the way, named routes of varying lengths, and junctions that let you plan your own routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Lendelede, these themes can help you decide whether to focus your stay on culture or walking.
Churches and Chapels
Sint-Blasius Church was built in the 12th century and was originally a Romanesque church. In the 16th century, it was remodeled and expanded into a Gothic hall church. The two dates mark different phases of the same building: first its construction as a Romanesque church, followed later by its remodeling and expansion. The terms therefore do not describe contradictory states: Romanesque refers to the original building, while Gothic hall church describes the later expansion.
Berg Chapel is located on the slope of the Lendelede ridge at an elevation of about 42.5 meters. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. Berg Chapel offers beautiful views of the Leie and Scheldt valleys. Its hillside setting, approximate elevation and views across both valleys add a landscape feature to its sacred architectural history.
Vermandels Chapel was built in 1887 by Theodoor Vermandele. It is Neo-Gothic and dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Its year of construction, architectural style and dedication give it a distinctive character among Lendelede’s religious buildings described here. Together, the three sites offer different reasons to visit: the building phases of Sint-Blasius Church, the setting and views at Berg Chapel, and the Neo-Gothic design of Vermandels Chapel.
Walking Routes and Custom Routes
The 10,000 Steps Activity Route is a walk with entertaining activity tasks along the way. It is 7,340 meters long. This lets you pair the route’s length with a special feature of the walk: it also includes activity tasks along the way.
The José Vermeersch Walking Route is 9.6 kilometers long and starts at the DOC, A. Dassonvillelaan 3 in Lendelede. As well as its distance, the route has a specifically named starting point. The Roland-Garros Route is the Lendelede-Sente Route. Its base route is 11 kilometers long and can be extended to about 13 kilometers. Its base route is therefore longer than the other two routes mentioned; with the possible extension, it is the longest of the distances listed here.
In addition to the named routes, there are a total of 56 junctions in the Lendelede countryside. They allow you to plan and set your own routes. This means you can consider a self-planned route as another option alongside the stated distances. The listed distances and the option to create your own routes offer different approaches if you would like to focus your stay on walking.
