Nieuwpoort can be explored through a range of historical and landscape themes: the Westfront tells the story of the city's destruction, the Duvetorre preserves traces of medieval architecture, and monuments commemorate people who died at sea or in war. There is also a carillon, a lighthouse and routes for walking or cycling. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on exhibitions and history, commemorative culture or exploring the polders on foot. This way, you can match your search for a hotel in Nieuwpoort to your own interests during your stay.

Westfront and the History of the City

Westfront Nieuwpoort tells the story of the city's destruction and how the flooding of the polders brought the German invasion to a standstill. The exhibition presents this history through unique objects, interactive modules and personal stories. It also features a 180° projection of the IJzer panorama. The different elements offer varied ways to engage with the subject: historical objects, personal accounts and the panoramic projection complement one another, rather than relying on a single form of presentation.

Duvetorre: Medieval Traces and Wartime History

The Duvetorre is a ruined tower and a remnant of the medieval Sint-Laurentiuskerk. In 1384, the surviving parts were converted into a fortified water castle. During the First World War, the Allies used the centuries-old tower as a lookout post. Enemy shelling caused widespread destruction and gave the ruin its present form. The building therefore reflects different stages of its history: its ecclesiastical origins, its conversion into a water castle and its destruction during the war. The site thus links medieval architectural history with the memory of the First World War.

Monuments and Carillon

The Vissersmonument is a life-size statue by the artist Pierre de Soete and a lasting memorial erected by the city of Nieuwpoort to all Belgian fishermen who lost their lives at sea. A silent memorial service is held at the monument every year on Whit Monday. The Nieuport Memorial honours more than 500 British soldiers who fell in 1914 and 1917. The monuments are dedicated to different groups: the Vissersmonument commemorates fishermen, while the Nieuport Memorial honours fallen British soldiers.

Nieuwpoort's carillon has 67 bells. It is played every Friday from 11 am to 12 noon. From mid-June to mid-September, carillon concerts are also held every Wednesday at 7:30 pm. If you would like to plan your visit around one of these times, check the schedule again before you travel.

Walking and Cycling Routes in Nieuwpoort

When choosing a route, you can compare two different options: the Nieuwpoort City Walking Route is 10.1 km long and starts at the Westfront Nieuwpoort Visitor Centre, Kustweg 2, 8620 Nieuwpoort. The Frontzate is an approximately 13 km green corridor for cycling and walking through peaceful polders between Diksmuide and Nieuwpoort. While the city walking route has a specific starting point, the Frontzate combines its distance with the polder landscape and two possible activities.

Four wheelchair-accessible walking routes have also been designed in Nieuwpoort, with no obstacles higher than 2 cm and no steep climbs. These criteria offer specific points to consider when planning your route; compare them with your personal needs.

The Nieuwpoort lighthouse stands on the right bank of the IJzer in the De IJzermonding nature reserve. Alongside historic buildings and memorials, this connection to the river and nature reserve is another point of reference in Nieuwpoort.
