Hertsberge
Accommodation in Hertsberge
When looking for a hotel in Hertsberge, it helps to first consider which part of the area matters most for your trip. Historic religious buildings, countryside, and a cycling and walking link offer different starting points. This lets you decide what to focus on during your stay before comparing hotels.
Churches, Chapels, and History
Sint-Janskerk in Hertsberge was built in 1891. It is a basilica-inspired church with neo-Gothic influences and a strong architectural unity. On its western side are two stained-glass windows from the chapel of the former Bulskampveld Castle, installed in the church in 1931. The building thus brings together a clearly dated construction and a specific feature with its own history.
Kasteel Hertsberge, also known as Kasteel Rapaert de Grass, dates back to the early Middle Ages. It stands amid an atmospheric landscaped park connected to the Ringbeek valley behind it. The site therefore has both a long-standing historical connection and a described link between parkland and valley.
The Kortekeerskapel offers a different architectural form: this small brick wayside chapel dates from 1899 and is dedicated to Our Lady. It is a pillar chapel made of reddish-brown brick. A small gabled roof covered in black Boom tiles sits above it, with a wrought-iron cross on the ridge. A lime tree shades the chapel. Along with its year of construction, the materials, roof, and cross give the chapel a clearly defined architectural profile.
The provostry established in Hertsberge by the Benedictine Abbey of Sint-Calixtus van Cysoing is part of the area's older history. A foundation around 1149 is considered likely; according to a legend, it may have been founded as early as around 800. The two dates have different status: one is a historical supposition, while the other is explicitly a legend. Today's Hertsbergveld is also connected to the former provostry, which owned several ponds there.
Stream Landscape and Routes
The bed and banks of the Hertsbergebeek are protected as a landscape. The protected stream landscape along the Hertsbergebeek is considered rare in Flanders as a whole and almost unique in West Flanders. The stream meanders freely, a geomorphological phenomenon. A wooded setting remains characteristic of Hertsberge today, adding another feature to the area's landscape.
For cycling and walking, there is the Fiets- en wandelverbinding Proosdijstraat. The route is 800 metres long, partly paved, and runs between Kampveld and Proosdijstraat. When planning your route, take both its 800-metre length and partly paved surface into account.
Seasonal Produce and Practical Planning
Bioboerderij De Levende Aarde in Hertsberge offers seasonal vegetables in its farm shop and at three markets. Two of them are farmers' markets where only the farm's own produce is sold. The seasonal selection and the special nature of these two markets can help you plan your visit. Check whether the farm will be at the market before your trip if you are planning to visit one.
If you are planning to use rental bikes, it is important to note when the information applies: in December 2025, five electric Hoppy rental bikes were available at Kerk Hertsberge. If you are planning to use this service, check current availability before your trip.
First decide what brings you to Hertsberge, then use that to guide your hotel search.
