Unterach Am Attersee: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Unterach Am Attersee
There are plenty of reasons to stay in Unterach am Attersee: Egelsee and the moor, trails to explore on foot or by bike, and local culture.
Nature Park, Moor Lake and Chestnut Forest
Unterach am Attersee is one of the municipalities in the Bauernland – Irrsee Mondsee Attersee Nature Park. Egelsee is a particularly notable landscape feature: at about 105 metres long and 65 metres wide, this moor lake is considered a remnant of the Ice Age.
In 1965, around 4.1 hectares of Egelsee and the Egelsee moor were designated a nature reserve by decree. In Unterach’s sweet chestnut forest, sweet chestnuts reach full maturity nowhere else north of the Alps.
Exploring on Foot
An easy hike leads directly from Unterach to Egelsee. Along the way, the route passes forests, animal enclosures and meadows, as well as numerous viewpoints. The scenery along the trail is therefore part of the hike, not just the destination at the lake.
Another option is the Unterach am Attersee Time Travel Trail. This easy themed circular trail is 1.9 kilometres long and takes about an hour. It runs from the Unterach am Attersee boat landing to Gustav Klimt Platz. If the distance and time required matter for planning your day, check the latest route information before setting off, as route measurements can change.
The hiking trail up Hochplettspitz follows forest paths and forestry roads to a viewing platform. From there, you can look out over Lake Attersee and many of the region’s mountains. The trails therefore have different focuses: on the Egelsee hike, forests, meadows and viewpoints accompany the route; at Hochplettspitz, the platform and its views of the lake and mountains are the destination.
Cycling and Activities on the Water
The R2 Salzkammergut Cycle Path, about 34 kilometres long, runs from Seewalchen to Unterach. After your ride, you can take a boat back to Attersee. If you’re planning this combination, check the current boat timetable so you can factor the return trip into your route planning.
The Unterach lido also offers specific activities on the water: there is a water-skiing school and a boat rental service. The cycle path and boat service can be combined when planning a tour; water skiing and boat rentals, on the other hand, are lido facilities. This lets you distinguish between cycling, a possible return trip by boat and activities on the water.
Culture and Local Events
Protected sites in Unterach am Attersee include the Catholic parish church of St Bartholomew and the former cemetery grounds, both protected as historic monuments by decree. The Viktor Kaplan Mausoleum is protected as a historic monument under a ruling pursuant to Section 3.
The Chestnut Festival takes place every year and offers a variety of local specialities. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates for your intended visit.
Groups, clubs, companies and tour groups can book the Unterach Cultural Hike at any time on request. Confirm your booking again before travelling. This is a separate planning option for these groups; it should not be confused with the hikes described as freely available.
