Luftenberg on the Danube combines a striking landscape with traces from different eras. The Luftenberg drops steeply on three sides towards the Danube plain; its hilltop is wooded. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these different aspects of the destination may play a role in your planning: walks and designated routes appeal to different interests than water activities or the history of the place.

Landscape and Water Activities

Lake Ausee Hohenlohe is a 23-hectare bathing lake surrounded by the Danube floodplains. It has two water-ski and wakeboard lifts, as well as an aquapark. Pedal boats and SUPs can each be rented for half an hour or a full hour. Swimming is seasonal; rental availability may also depend on the season.

The main access route for motor vehicles and bicycles to Lake Ausee crosses the bridge over the Mitterwasser. There is also an entrance for cyclists and pedestrians by the VELOKI kiosk, from the Danube side. Check the latest information about access and facilities before travelling. The bathing regulations from 2025 stipulate that, for hygiene reasons, guests must shower before entering the lake each time. Also check the bathing regulations in force before your visit.

Hiking, Cycling and Walks

In Luftenberg, the Danube Heights Trail is designated for hiking and the Danube Cycle Path for cycling. The digital town map published by the market municipality also lists the Auseerunde as a 10.00-kilometre hiking trail. The leisure overview therefore includes both named hiking options and a designated cycling route; a specific distance is also given for the Auseerunde.

Numerous gravel and sand habitats lie along the banks of the Abwinden-Asten Danube power station, making the area suitable for extended walks. This riverside landscape adds another way to spend time outdoors to the routes mentioned above.

Archaeological Traces and Castle Ruins

The wooded hilltop of the Luftenberg was already in use in prehistoric times: around 4000 BC, it served as a place of worship and refuge. Another archaeological trace dates to 1890, when a Bronze Age hoard was discovered on the hilltop. These two details point to widely separated periods and give the ridge a long history.

Luftenberg Castle is also part of this historical story. In 1542, the then owner of Luftenberg established a school for the noble sons of the surrounding area in the small castle. Today, only a few sparse remnants of the once-mighty castle walls remain. Those interested in history can consider archaeological finds, the hilltop's earlier use and the surviving castle ruins as different aspects of the place.

Golf and the Historic Meierhof

The Linz–Luftenberg Golf Club has an 18-hole course. Its clubhouse is housed in the lovingly restored historic Meierhof. The Meierhof's original structure dates from the second half of the 16th century; the building is listed as a protected monument. Here, today's golf course meets a historic building, whose use as a clubhouse is also part of the character of the complex.

When searching for a hotel, you can consider which of these aspects matters most for your stay: the wooded hilltop and its history, designated routes, walks or activities at Lake Ausee. This helps you first assess the destination based on your interests before checking suitable hotel offers.
