The hills and the valley of the Wangauer Ache shape the landscape around Oberwang. Hiking and Navigation

The “Lebensroas” is a 2 km circular hiking trail with a walking time of about 45 minutes. Its length and approximate walking time give you two specific points of reference for estimating how long the hike will take. Before your visit, check the latest route information on the “Lebensroas” website.

The gravel path on the “Lebensroas” is 1.50 metres wide. With a companion, it is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs; suitability depends on conditions on site. Another named route is “Places of Faith: In the Footsteps of Abbot Konrad”. It ends at Oberwang Parish Church. This differs from the “Lebensroas” in the way the routes are described: one has a stated endpoint, while the other is designated as a circular trail, with a specified length and approximate walking time. This lets you compare the routes based on the type of navigation that matters for your plans.

Konrad Church and Art

Konrad Church, a subsidiary church dedicated to St Martin, stands just outside Oberwang in the municipal district of Gessenschwandt, at the foot of the wooded Kulmberg. Its location clearly distinguishes it from Oberwang Parish Church, which is named as the endpoint of the Route of Faith. This distinction is useful when planning to explore the different religious sites and their respective connections.

The furnishings of Konrad Church also offer a specific point of interest in art history. Its Early Baroque high altar was probably created around the middle of the 17th century in the workshop led by Hans Pernegger the Younger, who died in 1630, Hans Waldburger. The dating is explicitly tentative. Nine of Konrad Church’s windows feature striking stained glass by an artist.

Festival, Tradition and Cultural History

The Konrad Festival takes place every year on the first Sunday in August. It is dedicated to contemporary art and includes a Mass at Konrad Church. If you would like to plan your visit around the festival, check the dates before travelling. The art and the Mass give the festival two distinct themes.

The Konrad Fountain marks a place associated with a local tradition: it is said that the body of the murdered Abbot Chunrad Bosinlother was buried there and later came back to the surface through a spring. The story links the fountain to the abbot’s history; it is distinct from the art-historical information about Konrad Church.

The operetta “Der fidele Bauer” is also part of the area’s cultural history: Leo Fall composed it following an encounter with the farmer Josef Schossleitner. Along with the Konrad Festival, the high altar and the church windows, it offers another way to explore the area beyond its landscape and hiking.
