Discover Obermühl on the Danube
Accommodation in Obermühl
Obermühl lies directly on the Danube at an elevation of 284 metres. The village’s location is a first point of reference when looking for a hotel for your trip: a Danube Trail stage and the Fish Nature Trail begin in Obermühl, while the Danube itself provides several specific points of reference. When comparing stays, you can use these to decide whether you mainly want to include the riverside setting, a hike or themed trails in your plans.
Danube village and striking granary
The three-storey Freyer Körnerkasten granary stands directly on the Danube in Obermühl and has an exceptional 16-metre-high roof structure. Alongside its riverside location, it provides an architectural landmark that stands out clearly from the walking and themed trails.
The Obermühl–Kobling Danube ferry runs on the Danube between Obermühl and Kobling in Haibach ob der Donau. If you plan to take the ferry, check the sailing times. The Obermühl boat landing is located where the Kleine Mühl flows into the Danube, and on the Danube Cycle Path. This means you can use both the ferry connection and the cycle path as points of reference when navigating by the water.
Hiking and themed trails
Danube Trail stage 1_N04, “Obermühl – St. Martin: Summit Conquest – Danube Valley & Mühlviertel Highlands,” starts in Obermühl. From the village centre, it follows a footpath uphill through the steep hillside forest of the Donauleiten. Factor in this steep ascent when planning your hike if you want to include it in your stay.
The Donaublickweg has its starting point in Obermühl; other starting points are Niederkappel village square and the Gierlinger inn. Obermühl is therefore one of several named starting points for this trail. By contrast, Obermühl is the starting village for the Danube Trail stage.
The Fish Nature Trail runs downstream from Obermühl for about two kilometres and provides information about the fish species found in the Danube. Ten glass panels describe typical fish species of the region and their way of life in detail. Unlike the Danube Trail stage, with its steep ascent, the focus here is on fish. This lets you distinguish between a nature-themed trail and a route through the hillside forest when choosing between the trails.
Along the Dr. Kirchschläger Trail, stations featuring pictures and quotations from Rudolf Kirchschläger’s life introduce themes such as politics, humanity and humour. Nearby, the Donauschlinge Nature Trail runs through the Donauleitn between Au and Grafenau; information boards explain the geology, fauna and flora. The themes thus range from biographical stations to nature information boards in the surrounding area.
Guided tours and tastings
Guided tours of the Fish Nature Trail are available for school classes and tourist groups by prior arrangement. Tastings of various Danube fish and a visit to the cider cellar with a tasting are also possible by prior arrangement. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, register in advance. This way, you can distinguish between a guided tour of the Fish Nature Trail and the offerings related to Danube fish and cider.
