Wendling combines a long ecclesiastical history with distinctive chapels and wayside markers. There are also plenty of options for an active trip: tennis, beach volleyball, ice-stock curling and equestrian sports are among the leisure activities on offer. When choosing your destination, you can decide whether you are mainly interested in local history or would also like to include sporting activities.

Churches and historic place names

Wendling is thought to have been settled in the 7th century. Historic forms of the name provide a later glimpse into the town’s history: on 9 January 1475, Wendling was called “Wendelgering”, and around 1557, “Wenndling”. A church dedicated to St. Ulrich is documented as having been built around 1200 to 1220. The originally Gothic parish church of St. Ulrich was rebuilt and enlarged in 1508. Its 48-metre-high spire served as the model for the church tower in Schwanenstadt.

Another church is dedicated to St. George: the Catholic branch church at Zupfing 3a, 4741 Wendling, is protected as a historic monument by decree. The monument register is current as of 23 June 2026. These two churches illustrate different aspects of the town’s religious architectural history—from the documented medieval church to the protected building in Zupfing.

Chapels, religious imagery and wayside markers

The Fellmaier Chapel in Fellhof was built in 1996 to replace an old, dilapidated chapel. On 25 May 1997, Msgr. Johann Kaltseis consecrated the new building. The Pauraleitner Chapel offers a different programme of religious imagery: after two years of construction, it was blessed on 23 May 2025 and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The altarpiece depicts an apparition of Mary. A bronze bell hangs in the tower, dedicated to St. Leonhard, the patron saint of animals and agriculture.

The Rappoltsberg wooden chapel is estimated to be 300 years old. It was built using log construction and clad with wooden shingles. In 1984, it was moved from its former location behind the Öhlschuster family’s farmhouse to its present site beside the road, and restored. Here, the construction and materials define the chapel’s character; the Fellmaier Chapel, by contrast, centres on a new building replacing a dilapidated predecessor.

The plague column at the entrance to the town also dates back more than 400 years. Its three reverse-glass paintings depict St. Wendelin, the Archangel Gabriel and St. Florian. The “High Cross”, also known as the “Rotenkreuz”, stands between Kubing and Zupfing on the Erlacher Landesstraße. It is also associated with the historic “Schinterweg” from Wendling to Erlach. The plague column and cross add two more historic landmarks to the town’s churches and chapels.
