Gmunden offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay combining culture, ceramics and nature. Schloss Ort stands on a tiny island in Lake Traunsee and is one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut. This makes it a historic site closely connected to the lakeside landscape.

Town History and Ceramics

At the K-Hof, 2,000 m² of exhibition space provides a chronological overview of the history of the town of Gmunden and the Lake Traunsee area. The exhibition spans from the beginnings of the Earth’s history to the 21st century and is spread across 14 exhibition rooms accessible without barriers. This makes the K-Hof an extensive introduction to regional history, from the distant past to more recent times.

The K-Hof includes the permanent exhibition “Klo&So”. It focuses on historic sanitary objects and also offers a cultural-historical perspective on the history of utilitarian ceramics. The exhibition is described as the world’s only museum dedicated to historic sanitary objects. It thus complements the K-Hof’s broad historical overview with a clearly defined subject.

The Kammerhof Museum in Gmunden displays an extensive collection of ceramic artworks and handcrafted objects in a dedicated exhibition and storage space. The Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur offers a different focus: the town describes it as Europe’s largest ceramics manufactory and the only business in the world that still practises the flame-decoration technique. If you would like to try painting ceramics yourself, you can do so there with guidance. Check the participation requirements before your trip.

GrĂĽnberg and Panoramic Views

A nature reserve is located on GrĂĽnberg, 1,004 metres above Lake Traunsee. The Salzkammergut Treetop Walk runs high above the forest floor, offering distinctive perspectives and panoramic views of Gmunden and the Lake Traunsee region. At the end of the path stands a 39-metre-high observation tower. The viewpoints along the path therefore offer different perspectives from the view provided by the tower at the end.

The designated ways to reach the treetop walk are the Grünberg cable car or walking; it cannot be reached by car. If you arrive by car, you must park in the valley. Check the operator’s access information again before your visit. The Grünbergbande adventure trail offers a different way to explore Grünberg: it runs from the mountain station around the summit to Laudachsee. Its destination is therefore the lake, whereas the treetop walk ends at the observation tower.

Experiences on the Water and Getting Around

Traunsee boat trips offer experiences of nature and culture on the water. Together with the panoramic views from GrĂĽnberg, they provide a choice of different perspectives on the landscape and region: from elevated views over the Lake Traunsee region to experiences on the lake. Which of these options you include depends on whether you want to focus your stay more on the views, a walk on GrĂĽnberg or the water.

For travel on the Traunseetram, the route between Vorchdorf-Eggenberg and Gmunden railway station is relevant. Check the latest service information before travelling. The places and attractions mentioned have different focuses; the tram connection provides its own point of reference through its two endpoints.

Then compare the specific information on location and amenities in each hotel offer. This keeps your choice aligned with your travel plans without assuming particular features for individual hotels.
