Discover Moosham: Hiking Trail, Coin Hoard and Landscape
Accommodation in Moosham
Moosham offers several ways to plan a trip, through hiking, local history and nature. The 1a hiking trail, the coin hoard and geological features provide specific points of interest, complemented by other cultural and natural attractions. This lets you shape your stay around your interests in outdoor activities, history or the landscape.
Hiking Trail and Community Association Activities
The 1a Moosham hiking trail is listed in the municipal hiking trail directory and is 8.80 km long. If you would like to make a hike the focus of your visit, this length gives you a concrete planning reference. The annual Marterlroas is also part of the activities of the Gschwandt Heritage and Cultural Association. If it matters to your travel plans, check the date in advance. These are two distinct points of interest: a route with a stated length and an annual event as part of the association’s activities.
Coin Hoard, Church and Music History
The Moosham coin hoard connects the area with the final years of the Babenberg era. It comprised 1,200 coins and had been buried around 1250. The hoard was discovered in Moosham, now MĂĽnzfeld, in 1963. The burial and the discovery therefore took place at clearly different times: the coins were hidden around 1250, and the hoard was found in 1963. Items from the coin hoard can be viewed at the Kammerhof Museum in Gmunden. Before visiting the museum, it is best to check the current opening hours.
The present-day late Gothic parish church of Gschwandt was built shortly before 1500 as a late Gothic country church with net rib vaults. The term refers to a vault whose ribs form a net-like pattern. A much later cultural connection leads to Höselberg Castle: Erich Wolfgang Korngold spent the summer months there from 1933 to 1937 and composed his last opera, “Kathrin,” there. The period covered thus extends from the church’s construction shortly before 1500 to Korngold’s stays in the 1930s.
Geology and Nature Around Moosham
The ridge from Baumgarten via Steinbichl to Moosham is part of the landscape shaped by the Riss glaciation. Below the hamlet of Moosham, as far as Lehenbauer, remnants of high terraces have been preserved, consisting of gravel deposits formed by meltwater runoff during the same glaciation. The ridge and the terrace remnants represent different features within this glacial landscape.
North of Moosham is a pond with an area of around 580 m², which is important for local amphibian populations. Field surveys in 2001 recorded 72 plant taxa in the remaining area of the Grafing Moor, north of Moosham. West of Moosham, a small beech forest with orchid species lies on a terrace slope and is slightly influenced by warmth. The pond, remnant of the moor and woodland offer different nature-related themes for planning a trip.
